Speedometer cable woes...
« on: August 12, 2008, 09:34:14 AM »
I didn't know that the speedo cable just slide out of it's hole connecting the front wheel. While servicing my front wheel, I tried getting the screw out that I assumed held the assembly intact, but of course, it's stripped to all hell, as it's very well stuck. (Tried torquing it off)

After I figured out that it just slide out, I can't seem to get it to stay in the hole. I hate using tape on the darn thing ( it looks cheap ), and it comes out eventually.

Has anyone had this problem, and what the heck can I do, aside from buying a new cable, to fix this situation?

Thanks again

Hmm, the cable shouldn't just slide out.  The screw on the side of the speedometer gearbox is the cable retaining screw.  You remove the screw to release the cable so that you can slide it out.  After reinstalling the cable, you reinstall the screw to hold it in place.  If you look at the end of the cable ferrule, you'll see a groove machined into it, this is the groove that the screw engages.

Got pics?

I'll try and get pics up this afternoon..

So with what you are saying the screw acts like the screw that holds the tach cable in place to the valve cover.

If that's the case, I'll have to get the screw out for the cable to seat correctly and tighten the screw onto it, holding it in place??

I suppose I'll have to located the 'ol dremel and try and cuts some grooves into the screw, to try and get it out with a flat head screw driver. If I can't locate the dremel, is there any other methods of which to back the screw back out?

The speedo works, but I believe the cable will just flop back out at any time..

Have the same issue.Backed the screw out, held the cable in place, and retightened the screw. It still acts like it wants to come out.

You got it, Jag.  As far as removing the broken screw is concerned, this has been discussed elsewhere and which technique is best will depend on what's binding it up to begin with.  That said, speedo drive units are out there to be had, some are more scarce then others.

The screw needs to be completely removed in order for the cable end to seat properly.  If you can visualize it, the groove in the cable end needs to line up with the screw hole, so that'll give you an idea how far in it's supposed to go.

Hmm-so the screw I have in 'hits' the inside of the forks when I back it all the way out. I wonder if someone put in an 'aftermarket' screw ???

The speedo housing is just rotated slightly out of the position it should be in. If you rotate it down more the screw will come out.
