which way are the carb slider adjusting screws supposed to turn to move the sliders up or down? clockwise or counterclockwise?

Assuming they are the same as the earlier 750's, the screw slips into a slanted notch in the side of the slide, so clockwise (screwing it in) raises the slide and counter-clockwise (screwing it out) lowers the slide.

The CB550 carbs are significantly different than the CB750, particularly the early CB750.

As for the 550 it depends on the year. 77 and 78 carbs are turned clockwise to close. Earlier carbs turn clockwise to open.

I never really paid much attention to it before.  I just truned them tuntill the guage needles went to where I wanted.
