Some parts needed, where to go?
« on: May 28, 2008, 09:24:06 PM »
I've given up on fixing my 77 CB550K myself, at least for the time being. I don't have the time to devote, nor the skill. I'm sure if I had a few days, the right tools and with the assistance of the knowledgeable here, I could do it. But I don't have a few days to spare. I'm lucky if I can come up with a couple hours here and there. If I want to ride this year, I need to pay someone to fix the bike.

So, a friend recommended a guy to work on my bike, and so far it sure seems like he knows what he's doing. Anyways, I know I'm going to need some parts, and obviously I want to spend as little as possible and get the parts as quick as possible.

I know I'm going to need some jets for the carbs, a new fuel petcock, gasket for the oil pan and the rear engine cover on the left side. I also need a new fuel filter with a finer screen than the current one. New points are recommended too.

So, where should I go? I know if the local dealer can get them I'll pay out the nose, if they have them. I checked CRC and they didn't have squat that I needed, except for a complete gasket kit for $90. But I don't need them all, just two of them. I also checked Dennis Kirk, and nothing was there either.

FWIW, I'm about 90 minutes SW of Chicago.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Hey Jeff,
hello from 10 minutes north of downtown chicago!
Try out http://www.siriusconinc.com for jets. they are spot on with their advise on jet sizing for mods and nice too.

try http://olypen.com/retro/ or https://www.partsnmore.com for your other needs.
Decent prices at both.

Good luck!

servicehonda.com has low prices for OEM Honda parts and ships fast. You'll need to buy OEM for the single gaskets and petcock(if available). You'll need the part#'s and you can look them up at cmsnl.com.

Fuel filter and points can be found a lot of places near you or online.

CRC does have cheap main jets

motorcyclecarbs.com is another source

I'll second that!!!  Harry is a great guy and has always been good with his advice.  I think they have a US number now, but routes you to their place in Canada.

Yes Harry is the guy to speak to.
They now have a VOip line that still is a Canada toll call but when i called (on my cell) i asked about it and he took my number and called me back immediately so i wouldn't be charged.

Well, I think I'm just going to get everything from my local dealer. After talking to the guy doing the work some more, he thinks the oil leak problem is coming from the o-rings on the oil pump, not the gaskets. So, I went to the local dealer, and got a new fuel filter, the o-rings, and jets for $30. The filter and some of the rings were in stock, the rest will be here Tues or Wed. I priced the fuel petcock and they wanted $49. I priced it at service honda, and the cost was $35, plus at least $9 shipping.  I have no idea if it's in stock, so, for the $5 extra, I know I can get it by Wed.

The 500/550 oil pump on old bikes tends to leak from the "O" ring under the top cover of the oil pump and Honda dont sell that one only the ones between pump and crankcase. I have spent mucho time at hydraulic suppliers and have "Sets" of O rings, 3 pump to case and 1 top cover, that i can airmail for $7.50 (postage went up a while ago)

What I bought are numbers 18 (2), 19, and 21 on this image. Number 21 is right next to number 7, and it actually looks like 2 and 17.

Which one are you saying I need? And, if you do airmail that, how long approximately would it take for me to get it? Where are you located? I'm near Chicago.

Thanks,
Jeff

I must be going bog eyed cos i cant find a number 21.

The one that leaks is not shown, if you look at the pump the outside (top) cover is held on by 3 countersunk posi screws and there is an O ring inside there.

I am in UK hence the airmail charge!

You're not bog eyed, it's hard to read. Find number 5. 21 is directly to the right of it. Looks like 2 and 17, but it's really 21 and 7. I'll have no problem paying the airmail charge. The other parts I have on order should be in today or tomorrow, and I presume a day or so after that my wrench will have the new parts installed and can tell me for sure if the leak is fixed or if it is indeed the one you're talking about.

Do you have any idea on the time frame it'll take for the airmail to be delivered, if I end up going that route?

Thanks,
Jeff
