wiring loom urghhhh
« on: June 04, 2008, 01:17:14 AM »
OK check this out (if you're a bit squeamish you should look away about now) I finally got sick of that damn ugly wiring loom and decided since the bike is laid up I might as well remove and renovate it.
The PO had encased it in "red" insulation tape from headlight bucket to tail light!
Red! I mean what was he thinking?
It looks like some poor buggers arterial tract ripped from his body by an alien. ;D
Pull the whole loom out! what the Hell was I thinking?
Anyhow it's out and after washing 30 years of crud and stickiness off the connectors I am going to return it to the only colour wiring harnesses (in my opinion) should be, yes like Henry Ford said "any colour as long as it ISN'T BLUDDY RED!!!" >:(
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

quick tip for you, if you want to be able to ensure the integrity of the wiring - do the old multimeter trick and check from end to end now and identify all your good and hopefully no bad wiring...instead of wrapping in that lovely electrical tape - which goes sticky over time and also makes the harness a little bit stiff to bend round corners.

buy some plastic wrap stuff that is easy to use (I'll find a photo and post it here).. I think I bought 5 metres of the stuff for $15 or so, and it works wonders and also lets you add more wire to the harness if need be - and it remains fully enclosed..

Yeah that is great stuff, looks better than what he`s got, you can buy varying sizes as well. Depending on what look he is going for is so much better if theres any mods or additions to be done

Oh yeah good call I've got some of that, I redid the boat electrics last year with it.
Found a few nasty lose wires tucked under that horrible red tape, not sure what they do but as they are behind rider and at about the right area I'd guess that they are the radio/RT wires.
I think i know my wiring loom pretty intimately now, always a good thing.
Will dig out multimeter and run ohms test to check continuity, another good call........thanks guys...........Hush.

Where'd you get that spiral wrap?  I guess it would help in the area of better flexibility, but it does seem to expose the wires more.  And wouldn't it be harder to get wires precisely where you wanted them, as I'm assuming you'd have to wrap the whole harness and put it on the bike.
I used some of that corrugated tubing from Autozone.  And Painless Wiring sells some stuff called powerwrap that's looks pretty tough, easy to install/modify.  Kinda pricey though.

The good thing with the wrap is if you need a wire out you just lead it out of the space between the spirals
