do you lock up your motorcycle?
« on: June 04, 2008, 03:43:23 PM »
i haven't had the need to lock up my bike to this point.  i keep it garaged at home but have left it unattended for hours at a time in plenty of places without a problem.  where i'm from in new york, sport bikes get lifted pretty quickly - my old roommate had 2 yamaha r1s snatched - but thieves here leave vintage bikes and cruisers be it seems.

but i'm getting ready for my first, long trip on this bike.  it'll take me to plenty of random spots, some seedy i'm sure, and i definitely don't want my trip cut short on account of some douchebag snatching my ride.  so i'm curious.

do you lock up your bike?  ever have your vintage bike like a CB snatched or know of someone who has?  i searched for 'stolen', 'theft', 'steal', etc. on these forums but the number of results were pretty sparse, but i'd like to hear some more direct accounts.  anyone know of a compact lightweight lock to use?  if i had cross-drilled rotors in the rear, i'd grab one of those locks that clamp over the rotor, but i've only got drums in the back.

cheers.

last year at the local quaker steak and lube my and a friend were there for bike night. when we noticed a guy kept walking around kyles perfect mint condition kz1000, the guy looked around a couple times then grabbed the handle bars and tried to take of running with it, did not go far kyle always puts a big padlock through his rear sprocket the guy the dropped his bike by this time we had caught up to him and pulverized him. of course about 6 of his friends took off towards us, at the time i was still and officer and had my glock 40 on me and i pulled it out and before i could get a sight on any of them i heard the familiar sound of a police cruiser and they all scatered... so yes if i go anywhere besides work and home i lock it

A short-term member of our local bike group had his 550 stolen from in front of his friend's house overnight.  I never heard if he ever got it back, though.

At home my bikes are in a fairly secure garage, but I don't lock them when I'm out.  I also never leave them for very long in a place that seem un-secure, and never out in the open overnight.

A friend and I are planning a bike trip to Austin this Summer, and I definitely plan on securing the bikes in the Hotel parking lots, in addition to covering them.  I'm thinking a reinforced chain locking both rear wheels together should do the trick.

Just make sure that you lock the frame to something solid.  I had a Katana stolen from me years ago that had a disc lock on it but it wasn't attached to anything.  A couple guys can pick it up and have it in the back of a truck in a few minutes.

If you have the cash, you might want to spring for one of those two way alarms that page you if someone messes with your bike.

One more idea.  If you're staying at a motel, request a bottom floor room and roll the bike in with you.  Make sure the manager doesn't see you and put something underneath to catch any drips.

I had a neighbour stolen his CBR900 twice. The second one with the front wheel attached to the ground with something like a big, thick metal box that covered the whole wheel. They took everything they could: fairing, exhaust, gas tank, rear wheel etc.

I lock all my bikes. In my condo garage is easier to steal than in the streets: once they get in, nobody can hear them working at night....

See picture to the left. Whats left of my first bike. Found what was left of it at a junk yard three years later. I Had a different tank and seat on it at the time. When it was stolen there was a gold wing parked right next to me. They smashed the ignition and hot wired it. Now I always lock the forks, even parked in my own garage.

sorry to see such a thing.  was that a cb750?  but how did you happen to come across it - sheer chance?

i'd like to hear more stories from you folks, more positive ones from you lockless riders perhaps?
and recommendations on locks from those that do.  most cable + u-locks seem like too much of an encumbrance; ideal would be something that i could stow somewhere in or on the bike itself without requiring its own storage, eg - this is close: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Cycle-Lok-Large-version-6-Arm-Motorcycle-Lock_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35603QQihZ011QQitemZ320259144369QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Some wannabe outlaw bag licking #$%*er rolled my bike across the street from the bar I was in, it freaked me out and pissed me off like nothing else.  The guy was a real pussy about it, I went back into the bar and started quizzing the door man and got nowhere.  A few months later an acquaintance found out who it was because the ass pony was bragging about it still.  I will kick him in the nuts if I get the chance.   Lock your head at a minimum.

Oh yeah....one cb450 stolen from my garage in Keene, NH and a GT250 stolen outside a dealership in Orlando FL. Got the first one back, the GT250 well, I know who stole it but the cops wouldn't go after the guy (a former Orlando policeman!) Go figure.

Currently lock my bikes up at work. Only lock the forks and sometimes use a heavy chain on the rear wheel. Employer (target) will not let us lock them near the building onto something solid.

Only 20/23 cars were broken into at work before the cops caught the thief, AND he was tring to break into MY junk Honda Civic! Must have wanted the broken radio?

What really pissed me off is: my boss didn't tell me this, fellow workers did.
peace,

Even in my garage I lock the steering (not that it is a huge deal) and I also lock the wheel. On the CBR I use a disc lock and on the CX I use a U-lock on the rear wheel. I even have a pad lock that goes through the track of my garage door...this after hearing of my buddies F4i beign stolen right out of his garage!

When I ride to work or wherever I always use the disc lock unless it is parked in my line of sight...

I lucked out with the parking situation at my work, so I don't have to worry about my bike much when it's there.  We have free parking in a garage, four floors below ground level with security gates, security guards and plenty of cameras.  Plus there's always people coming and going, everybody knows my bikes, and I always park in the same spot in full view of the elevator/stairwell.

That's actually one of the main reasons I've stayed at that location.  If I were at any of the other locations in Denver I'd have to park in an exposed parking lot with no security, and in the Winter the car or bike is always warm and dry when I get off work.

Mine are stored in a locked garage attached to the house.  Never thought about locking the steering on any of them while in the garage.  When I have them out riding I never stop anywhere unless I am with the bike.  These things are so valuable someone could load one into a pickup and be gone in the blink of an eye.  So I never leave mine unattended.  Heck, I even ride it in the living room when the wife is gone... ;D

nice one johnie.

the only bike i've ever had stolen was when i first moved to phoenix to attend MMI.  I moved into a condo unit where many of the other students were living.
the 72 suzuki tc125 was heavily chained to the metal carport post.  the 89 kawi ex500 sat right next to it, in much better condition, unlocked and unscathed.
the one bike that had the most sentimental value to me... dad and i fixed it up and it was the one i learned to ride.
dude better watch his back.

I lock all my bikes with chain and padlock in a locked garage. If any of them were stolen I would know I did everything in my power to have prevented it. Regrets suck. What did Gunnery Sargent Hartman say....."There would be no thievery if people locked things"

so consensus here seems to be in favor of:  locking at most or all times, especially when leaving it unattended for a while with two dissenting approaches taken by tramp, whose dirty and unmarked bike does just fine as a theft deterrent and seaweb, but he doesn't even lock his house.  i can actually relate to seaweb.  i spent two summers out on this tiny island called 'block island' off the coast of rhode island.  people left everything unlocked, people hitchhiked.  you could trust everyone and anyone since people who lived on the island were there precisely because that is the way they preferred to live in the first place; not to mention, you couldn't get too far too quickly since you were on, after all, a very small island.  you're in a good spot, seaweb.  though i've spent most of my life in nyc and baltimore, i've tried best to maintain and even import that kind of mentality here.

tough - i haven't had too much stuff stolen from me over my lifetime, but of the 4-5 times it's happened the only thing i miss out of all of them was the bmx bike that i scrimped and saved to piece together, bit by bit, but was stolen in a flash, unlocked, in front of a strip mall.  i was 12 at the time and even then, didn't like the hassle of clamping down a bike.  it's supposed to be mobile, instantaneously mobile, just hop on and go, but that very beautiful benefit applies to anyone and not just the owner.

well i'm on the hunt for a good luck.  if you have a lock that you swear by because it's amazing in some way, please post it here and tell us why you think so.  light and compact, but still strong enough to hold up to be bolt cutters is what i'm looking for.

If you have a drilled rotor then a disc lock to me is the best for ease of use and carrying. I can actully lock mine on one of the reflector brackets on the CBR so I don't even have to carry it. Probably not the most secure since you can still lift the front wheel off the ground if you want it bad enough but my thinking is I should be ok as long as I make my ride slightly harder to steal than the bike I'm parked next to  ;)

I once stayed overnight at a hotel in Madison WI seems like it was in a decent area away from downtown. I locked the steering and used a padlock and chain thur the front disc. The next morning,  I found someone keyed the tank. Makes me wonder if some punk or was like look a old dumb bike, lets key it! or if they were mad because they couldn't steal it. Will always have me wondering.
