and that's why it's good to be .................... ;D

Seriously though, all my bikes are well known on the Island. You would never get off the ferry without a ferry employee or resident  doing something.

This little Island id truly the Mayberry of the 60's still.
I truly feel blessed that I found this place to bring up my youngest.

I have to remember to look both ways at city intersections. "You really do forget" ;D

P.S. Never take your ball home.   An old dude (40's) said to me when I was in my 20's...............
Take a wealthy guy out for lunch, he may be able to open your eyes to what's in you to do the same 8)   worked for me........I bought quite a few lunches though ::)

work ethic/self employment ramble over.

I think the vast majority of bikes stolen are racy streetbikes.  The F4I is a lot less valuable then the CBR's, but it far more likely to be stolen....probably because the stunters love it for some reason or other. At around 400 lbs., two people could have it in a truck in a flash...just lay it on foam if they really care about pawning it.

I have thought about an alarm, but how would you react if it went off?  I'm not sure I would want to confront possibly armed thieves...maybe get a license number?

I think overnights in motels are one of the major risks. On my recent trip, the bike stayed in the room with me all but one night. That was fine except for, in a half awake state, almost knocking it over trying to wander to the head late at night in the dark room!  ::)

See picture to the left. Whats left of my first bike. Found what was left of it at a junk yard three years later. I Had a different tank and seat on it at the time. When it was stolen there was a gold wing parked right next to me. They smashed the ignition and hot wired it. Now I always lock the forks, even parked in my own garage.

sorry to see such a thing.  was that a CB750?  but how did you happen to come across it - sheer chance?

I'd like to hear more stories from you folks, more positive ones from you lockless riders perhaps?
and recommendations on locks from those that do.  most cable + u-locks seem like too much of an encumbrance; ideal would be something that i could stow somewhere in or on the bike itself without requiring its own storage, eg - this is close:

Sorry to get back so late. Yes it's my 71 750 chopper. I had lots of chrome on it. was working out some bugs in the engine and had a plain black tank and oem seat on it at the time.
Fast forward three years later. As my job at the time included visiting all over the county and walking around in peoples back yards I had never stopped looking for it. It was big fashion at the local highschool to steal hood ornaments from cars and wear them as necklaces at the time. My nephew wanted one so I told him I would take him to a junk yard to look for one. We walked into the junk yard and I saw a row of bikes. We looked over every one but didn't see it. Just when we were going to go back to the autos I saw a pile of frames, walked over and there it was. Spent the next two days going through three police departments telling my story over and over again to detectives who didn't really want to hear it. I got so fed up with them that when the last one asked me "how do you know it's your bike?" I told him " I can stand here and tell you but you will have to listen to my story for the next 10 minits." He just turned to the street officer next to him and told him to go with me. We went to the junk yard, the officer asked me which one it was, and "uh, where is the VIN number?". He compairs the VIN number and says," Hey, this is your bike!) DUH!!!!!!

So I have a chopper frame and tank/seat combo setting in my garage. Maybe one of these days I'll rebuild it.

You draw your .45, and go and see whats going on with your bike, being aware of concealment/cover as you go.  People have to start taking some responsibility for their safety and protection of their property, if we are ever going to turn this crime problem around.  If you haven't got one yet, go and get a concealed carry permit and a pistol, and live up to your obligation to our free society (USA only, those who are "subjects" of other governments need not apply.)

Had two bikes knocked over, and one project bike stolen.  I traded my home stereo for it, it needed a lot of work, but I hid it behind my Scout in my carport. I think the guy who stole it was the same guy I got it from.  I knew he and his brothers were like that, I should have known better.

Otherwise I just lock the steering.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

If I had locks for 61 motorcycles.....
I have a dog. He barks, as do all the neighbors.
We all have guns.
No problems with theft.
Huh? Go figure!

People whom lock their cars around here are usually from out of state (and often cars to both sides of them have their windows down and cash on the dash). ;D

Same with motorcycles, except for the cash on the dash thing.

It's the same in some densely populated areas, too.  If you lock your doors, you'll just have to replace a window in addition to your stereo.
