Furnaces - yes, furnaces.
« on: August 25, 2005, 06:19:12 PM »
I'm in the market for a new furnace.  Mid efficiency, 2 stage, maybe variable speed.

Anyone know anything about furnaces?  York, Carrier, Bryant, Lennox, Luxaire... my head hurts!

About 80,000 BTU.  Any suggestions / brands to avoid etc. would be welcomed.

We had out entire system replaced and central A/C installed about 8+ years ago. It's a Lennox, high efficiency, like 95% or something, damn thing vents through hole out the side wall that is not much bigger than a 25 cent piece. We love it.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

back in New York I had to re-furnace our house. The A/C people told us that coal pellets are the most efficient availible....But this was for a 27 rooom, 4 story...and it was a BIG furnace.

Yeah...coal. Were back to coal.

We looked into all types of fuel...and coal pellets were the best.

27 room 4 story house?  That's some house!  I have a modest 3 story semi-attached 80 year old brick house in an old neighborhood of Toronto.  The house is 15 feet wide  ;D

yeah...and that does not include bathrooms or the basement or any rooms in the attic. That place is old too. like 150. Took a mint to insulate it. And cost a mint to heat...but we dont go there in the winter so...just enogh to keep the pipes from freezing.

Tintin, we Just had our furnace replaced:

We got a Carrier, 120,000 BTU furnace, and one of those wiz-bang air-cleaners and because we are in Colorado (very DRY) we got a Humidifier.  It set us back $5k, but I think it will do well, and the air cleaner is already cutting down on the dust.  We live adjacent to 15 acres of open space, so it is more dusty in our area, than if we lived in a "downtown" environment.

Hope this helps.  We bought Carrier furnace, because we had a Carrier Air-conditioner installed, and wanted to use same company - good service and prompt and trustworthy.

We also check "Consumer Reports" for researching what we thought we needed.

Best of luck!

Linda

Another one for the "divided by a common language" thread.

A "furnace" is what you make steel in (or jewelery, or pots)

We call them "boilers" (coz they "boil" the water for the heating and hot water systems)

Boilers are only handy if you have radiators- Furnace is for forced-air systems.

Hey, Tintin-

Got an extra 750 mill lying around? You could route the exhaust up the chimney and run the blower fan over the fins on the cylinders! Then, in the summer you can take it out and put it back in the bike! Problem solved! :D

Yea - most of us in UK have radiators. Very few A/C systems or forced air (don't need it - no summer you know)

Actually, I've lived in places with both (radiator and forced-air), but I had to rag on ya! :)

When  I first suggested we have a "common language" thread, I was keeping it to motorcycle-specific terminology, since some of the manuals we use (like Haynes) are published in the UK. I must have read the engine rebuild section 5 times before I finally figured out what the heck a gudgeon pin was!

In US-Speak, that's the "wrist pin"- the part that connects the piston to the connecting rod. (#6 Below)

The language thread is in the FAQs if anyone wants to add to it.
