I have too many parts....

Time to put them to use!!!
This bike is a '82SOHCcb650sc(I thought the SC 650's were shaft driven??) being built completely out of "spare" parts lying around.
 
Or at least thats the goal.


The tank in the picture.... can anyone identify it?
I got it in a deal once, and the PO thought it came off from a honda... but it fits no 750, 550, or 650 i have come across. I have it lifted up a bit in the front for clearance for now.
The rims in the pic are for setup only really(although the rear disk is tempting to keep!), I plan on going with spoke rims in the end.

Whaddya think so far?

Yeah splinters might be a probem though!
That tank reminds me of the Kwaka 900.
What model Honda has a rear disc brake Soos?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

When the 650 went dual cam in 83 it got a shaft.    Instead of the long bent bar why not a clampon/clipon?

Cycle Exchange has a 750 rear disk set up.  It could be made to work.

Why not just build it as the Nighthawk it is? only your version of a Nighthawk?

I would build this one as stock... if I had enough parts to make finding the other parts feasible, money wise.
The rear disk is off of a '79cb750 DOHC.

I am using the bent bars for now... I'm trying to do this one with as little money involved possible. Clip-ons would be great, if I come across a set for cheap.

I'm working on ideas for rear-sets using the stock front pegs.... but it ain't looking easy so far.

Strangely enough the shifter when mounted on facing back  it reaches my left foot enough to shift. But the brake side is gonna be the interesting one...

Oh yeah I forgot about the CB900, now there is a rare bike.
I saw this CBX1000 on Trade-me a few weeks back and copied the photo for my collection, I completely forgot they even made these monsters!

If I had the money for the shipping!

My motivation is, I NEED more room in my garage.(for the incoming Goldwing basket case that is!)
I would REALLY hate to load up the van and take all the spare bits down to a salvage yard.(even though I know i'd make a mint on some of the parts!)
So the next best thing is make the parts roll down the road!  ;D ;D

I am going to attempt to keep the build cost under $250.00.
And tires will eat most if not all of that.


I have been working on making a set of clip on type bars for this bike.
The bars on there at the moment would work.... but not quite what I want.

Just out of interest, what do tires around this planet cost for a big road bike?
Locally there is a special on a front and back set of fairly good roadies @ $450 kiwi.
Not sure how that measures up to Europe and USA/Canada but many parts sold on Ebay are going here for equivilent prices.

If you have a haynes manual it shows then good.  Or ask for some 4 pics on the 650 site most of the members there are not in USA.

I paid 200 for the tires, and 60 for mounting on my 'lil bagger '81 650's tires.
The tires are michelin macadam 50's front and rear.
Have no idea what $260 US converts into for your currency though.

Yeah I bought the vb44D carbs from you, and by the way, they didn't even need a carb kit to get them going great, a good cleaning, and synchronization... and they were running!
I put them on the motor that came out of this '82 but i put the motor and carbs on my '81cb650.

And yes the PO spraypainted the frame silver, and the rims are (?stock?) silver as well.


I have been toying with the idea of either going white powdercoat, or silver metalic finish(powder/paint?)


I have solved the rearsets problem with the help of this forum(i love the search function!).

I'm going to use DOHC750 mounts for the foot pegs(the mounts are about 2 inches longer than the 650's) and custom made footpegs(out of 17-4 stainless steel)
Will be solving problems with this setup as i build them! hahaha....

If I had the cash... There is a few parts i would get from you for sure.
Who knows by the time i'm ready I may be getting a few of those parts from you.

Well, I have found my answer for the rearsets.
Using the bracket for the footpegs off a 750DOHC and custom pegs, a bushing or two, some linkages, and i'm in business...Ok it's a bit more involved... but it's a free part.

I have made 1 test peg to feel for the diameter and location, it seems ok to me so far.
Not too sure on the diameter though.
Seems a bit big even with my size 13 boats on there.



Anyone think it's safe to cut away the excess material that is not the webs on this part?

I'm SERIOUSLY tempted. I think doing so could detract from the parts looks... possibly the strength, but i think it will live.
Hopefully I do as well!

I'm running 118's in those carbs, and at my elevation i'm running on the rich side.
It's worse when i actually get up into the mountains though!
I live at 4,500 ft above sea level, my favorite ride areas are 9,000 ft+ elevation.
I'm going to drop the main jet size here soon. thinking 115's or 112.5's are going to help with the rich running at elevation.
I just better not take this bike to sea level.

But anyways...

I'm liking the white or silver scheme. But I'm thinking of going with a sky or baby blue instead of red. Dunno... need to play with a picture editor to really get a good idea of what I want to go with.

Have to get this thing roughed out before i even look at colors though. SOOOO much to do.... so little money :)

I'm thinking it may hold up. the bracket is about 1/2" thick. Everything would be interconnected.... but man thats a pile o work.... Mabey one day.


Gotta work on the heap o parts.....


Now since i have figured out the parts I was after, i'm deciding whether or not to make the motor for this bike 65mm pistons or not..... I better decide before re-assembling the motor for it.
I'm going to have to bore the upper half of the motor case If I want to go with those pistons.....

Actually you got me thinking.....

So I took the origionals to work last night, and vut one out similar to the pics..

I put it on 2 square pieces of steel, and stood on the middle... SNAP.


SOO..... I have no plans whatsoever to even think of doing so to this set I will be using on this bike.
