So, I'm having a bit of difficulty figuring out how this thing goes together, I've been following the included instructions, and have a Clymer manual.
I've go the points assembly off, but thats where I start getting bogged down. First, I'm naive as to the names of some of the parts advance assembly, points cam, advance assembly shaft, and the rotor. What's what in here? Second, the instructions mention a magnet on the side of the rotor, I'm not seeing it. Last, how do these parts fit together? The black cylinder in the pic below doesn't seem to fit with anything else. Am I missing parts? Does anyone have a pic of theirs installed? This doesn't seem like it should be that complicated. Thanks in advance for your help. I want to get this thing back together and ride!

U sure you have the right kit for your bike? I think 550's and 750's are the same but 400's and 350's take a different rotor. Also, the magnet on the rotor looks like a little circle.

You take the factory metal piece off and replace it with the black piece.  If you look on the black piece you will see a small circle indention on the outside.  That's the magnet they are talking about.  I know that might not help much but I'm at work and don't have much time.  If no one else replies I'll sit down when I get home and give you a better explanation.

Thanks for the help, I think I've got the ignition squared away; on to the dyna coils. I know one is for cylinders 1&4, and the other for cylinders 2&3, which plug wire goes to which hole on each coil? Thanks, I'm getting close.

Look for posts by HondaMan about Dyna coils and Dyna-S.  I seem to remember there being some confusion (even from Dyna) about how to configure your coils (in terms of resistance).

You'll do well to listen to his advice.  You may want to hang with your stock coils until you determine how much resistance you need with the Dyna coils you have.   :-\

HondaMan does sell (inexpensively) resistors to get you where you need to be (if you need a change)... but even if you don't buy from him, I'd listen to his advice.

You're kind of speaking Greek to me, I'll definitely check the archives, but I thought I could plug this stuff in and go.

In one coil you insert leads 1 and 4 doesnt matter which hole in other coil leads 2 and 4.

buy a resister pack ( very cheap) off hondaman will stop you frying your dyna s ignition.

does anyone have a pic of the blue connector to the black ground going to the coils. i'm unclear as to which part of the blk ground wire i'm suppose to connect it to.
is it the blk wire from the wiring harness or the two wires from the coils

The black wire (w/ white stripe, I believe) that you're talking about is +12V, not ground.  On the stock wiring harness green is ground.

Maybe you're making to much out of this installation.
Mine went in over a couple of beers and everything was straight forward.
Your coils need to be a minimum 3ohm resistance.
I used Dyne 5ohm coils as that is the same resistance as stock and I didn't want to consume more power that the already overworked charging system can handle.

The Dyna S has three wires. One for each coil and the other (red) for a switched 12v power supply. I used the power supply for the rear brake light switch. It’s conveniently available in the same location as the coil wires, right near the airbox. You can confirm the switched power lead with a test light or volt meter to round.

If there was a part that took a little time and thought it was static timing the ignition. Follow the instructions and all should work just fine.

Bike fires up on first stab of the started button and runs much smoother too.

Cheers
FJ

part two of setting the timing is bothering me:
2] Turn ignition switch on. While holding the rotor in the fully advanced position [clockwise] slowly rotate the engine forward until the test light turns on. The right hand advance mark for cylinders 1-4 should align with the fixed mark on the engine case.

while holding the rotor? how exactly did you all do that?

You should be able to get your sausages between the two pick-ups and turn the black rotor clockwise. You did, lightly oil the rotor and confirm that it moves freely, didn’t you?
