the tank is stock, i just stripped it down and repainted part of it. the bare metal is not clear coated. I use Gibbs brand and it works awesome. no rust yet. I redid the inside, also. I have a whole process for doing that. tell ya bout it some other time. the gas is always crystal clear, though. the seat used to be a king/queen style seat. I modified it by cutting down the foam, altering the cover a little and pulling it down a lot further. there is a metal box welded into it, so the back hump actually holds you in place when going fast. it's cool for passengers, too. my girl says it's comfy enough. the seat strap is from a 78 Honda Hawk parts bike I had. I just cut it to fit. purely for looks. the only things that I've spent much on are the exhaust, which I got a smokin deal on, and the speedo, which was about 80 dollars. it's everybodys favorite part, though. so it was worth it. I made the license mount out of a sissy bar style one and some random brackets. I don't have a welder so I just drill holes and use bolts, jb weld sometimes. I ground down a stock triple tree to get a cleaner look up top. my ignition switch is up top, with a flip cover, next to my cigarette lighter! pretty cool, huh. I can charge my cell phone on my 40 yr old bike. that was an ebay find for under 10 bucks. the back wheel rim is an HD 16X4, with a 150 tire. it just fits. had to change a few things to make it work. the rear shocks are later Honda 12" ones from a 450. I may change them at some point, but they seem to work well. front fork tubes are pushed through the top of the tree to lower the front end about an inch. the right side mirror mount has an led in it. I used to live in west oakland with no garage, I had lots of problems so I got an alarm, thats what the led is for. at one point when doing an oil change I found a cigarette butt in my oil filter, someone put out their butt in my oil tank! the next day the side covers I just bought were stolen, thats when I got the alarm.

anyways theres more but thats enough typing for now. I'm glad you dig it and I'm happy to answer more questions later.

you can check out my myspace page for more pics of the bike.

oh, yeah those aren't decals. the 750's and the '71 on the brake caliper I hand painted, and I did pin striping on the stripes also, which is hard to see, because it's black on black. different sheens, though.

Thanks TCB and jeanhank, awesome shares :-)

PS: tcb, you have to make a thread on how you line your tanks (or clean them) because so many people do it and just totally ruin the inside of their tank. My gas is slightly tinted, although the inside it pretty freaking clean.

holy crap! 8000 miles. from where to where? you're awesome. what year's your bike? I assume you're on top of all the mechanical stuff to be able to trust it to go that far. the farthest I've gone so far is to sacto and back. but I plan on riding her home to seattle soon. my engine is still original, though. so it's a little bit of a gamble.

i'll post more info on how I clean a rusty tank later. awesome bikes you guys. I love this site.

Looking good Jean - from where to where? The photo looks like the Rockies in Canada or perhaps the Alaskan Highway? Keep going and have fun!! And more info please!

TCB - very nice shots of the bike and some nice touches - looking very sharp. I agree about more details on the tank. As for distance on a CB750 (or any bike for that matter) the CB750 is one of the most reliable bikes for long distance riding and if anything does break its usually very easy to fix. I rode 16,000 miles going from Boston to San Francisco to Mexico and back in 2 months. No mechanical issues, only punctures.

cheers
Andy

it's a 1970 k0 with a k1 motor, and a lot of frame parts from other years.  someone had built it themselves with an 836 motor and a tracy body.  it doesn't have either anymore.

i rode from san francisco to minneapolis first, via oregon, idaho, wyoming and south dakota.  i stayed with a friend for a week.  then i went to montana from there and roamed around for about eight days or so.  that picture was taken in glacier national park on going-to-the-sun road, or at least the short section that was open back then.  then i headed south through idaho, utah, and colorado to northern new mexico, where i attended a wedding in the sangre de christo mountains.  after staying in santa fe after that with my girlfriend and her mom and aunt, they drove in a car through utah with me.  then i headed up nevada and back home via sonora pass in the sierra nevadas.

the weather kept things interesting.  there was a lot of rain, snow at one point, hail, and wind.  the clouds were pure majesty.  i rode through a severe thunderstorm for about three hours heading into minneapolis on the night of 5/27.  i'm too cheap to buy a $400 nylon suit, but i do have a nice hein gericke leather jacket and rain shell pants.  i wore a t-shirt under a thermal (i forget the brand but they're always navy blue i think and have no waffles and are awesome) with sleeves i tucked into my gloves, and a western shirt over that for a bit of formality, and i used hand warmers in my breast pockets to minimize heat loss.  i wore long johns and jeans and wool socks and boots.  i have a fleece hood/neck-warmer thing that saved me.  i was usually pretty cozy, but in minnesota i got soaked through.  i kept going that night because i saw a lone headlight on the other side of the freeway -- some harley dude was in the same boat as me, so i figured if he could do it, well what the hell.  my camping gear did not let me down either.

that's the bike i ride everywhere in the city as well, so i'm pretty familiar with it and how it handles rough treatment.  before leaving, i spent a couple of days tuning up the motor, getting new tires, and putting on a new front wheel (bearing retainers are a nightmare).  everything turned out fine except that my master cylinder gave out and i had to get some parts overnighted to glasgow, montana.  the master cylinder actually had two concurrent problems... oh and i looked down at the chain in moab and one of the plates was half broken off.  at this point i also noticed that the rubber bootie under the m/c lid was broken and i was losing brake fluid from under the lid.  there was nothing i could do about it there, so i ended up having to ride to durango, colorado from there with a bad, worn chain held together with a dodgy master link and a weak front brake.  oh on the second to last day my side stand broke off from the frame somehow while i was parked on a bit of a slope.  i was trying to get back on the bike at the time, and it fell on my leg, but somehow i caught it and was able to muscle it back upright.  that was not cool.  i was left out of breath and heart racing.  i found a welder in town.  he turned out to be a young guy like me who was just starting out his own business.  he accidentally set a rag on fire at one point.  but he did a good job with the re-welding, and he wasn't a goon like the other welders i talked to who i found on google SMS.

i ended up being able to deal with everything fine, even if it cost kind of a lot of money because of shipping and time constraints.  i rather enjoyed it, actually, at the time.  other than that i just kept an eye on my oil, changed it every 3K (more than i usually go for), and my points.  my "hondaman" ignition box never had a problem.  i never got in a mood to check valve clearances even though i should have.  by the time i got home they were wayyy off.

now that i'm home, i'm still riding the bike everywhere, only the rear tire is square as a car tire, the motor leaks a little oil, my forks are COMPLETELY shot, and i'm pretty broke.  donations are humbly accepted.   :D

i'd like to share some more stories and pictures with the people here on this forum.  as soon as i get my act together, i'll be sure to put up a thread.

Wow some very nice vintage beauty on these pages , makes me remember why I love the old stuff !

In 1977 I bought a brand new K8 off the show room floor , I could have gone with the KZ but was loyal to Honda after growing up on a Super 90 and an SL 100 , then a CL 350 then a CB 360T and an Elsinore thrown in for grins along the way. So I put 1500 mi. on this K8 and one night I outran my headlight , The bike was destroyed after flipping  tail light over handle bars at 70+ mph , I was lucky, had time to think while the bones healed . Decided all future rides would not be Bud Fueled ! The insurance paid off and I went straight to the dealer and bought my 2nd K8 in 9 mos. That one was built after the styling of Russ Collins who was THE MAN back then, my engine was built in Cali by RC Engineering and was supposedly around 912 cc's. I cannot describe the awesome feeling of riding that Kaw Killer, even though it was not very streetable or comfortable. Who Cared ? Fast It Was !
Anyway Kids Came - Bike Went and I was without an SOHC in the garage for 23 years . Went the HD route and always missed The old Hondas.
I saw this completly stock K8 at a restuarant in Houston and found out it was for sale, paid twice what a new one cost but now I own another K8 with 28k and am only going cosmetic , no pumped motor in the plans at this time , also will keep all stock parts where it can be restored to original if that occurs to me later.
Thanks for looking , lots of world class bikes on these pages, unbeleivable customs and restos. Nice.
Found this bike in completely stock condition in Feb. 08. Paid over twice what my new one cost 30 years ago. Am trying to re-create the look of the late 70's Drag Bike styling.More later. 4-2-10 It ain't stock any more and I have no idea what I am trying to create !

Jeanhank- that sounds like a lot of fun, actually. I used to ride my cb200 up to vancouver b.c. from seattle, where i grew up, to go skateboarding for the weekend. almost every weekend for about a year. I plan on riding up to seattle from sf soon. i guess I've already put way more miles on it than the length of that trip, so I'm sure it'll be fine. thats one reason I love Hondas. you don't have to do much. you can actually do nothing for a long time and suffer nothing more than guilt. sometimes I think my british bike buddies are masochists. I commute from San Leandro to SF every day. to paint rich bastards houses, so I put a lot of miles on my bike. they're stressful miles, though. lanesplitting most of the way. which is actually kinda fun sometimes. just not relaxing. so it will be nice to just cruise for a state or two. cant wait.

Not much to look at, but she runs well. Bought it off a guy that lost his leg to diabetes and was clearing out his stable of project bikes. It's a '72.  I added the wheels, front end, seat and tank... it was a "practice tank" for trying out two shades of paint i wanted to use on another bike. It was in better shape than the tank the bike had on it, so I swapped it. The Supertrapp is a $5 back of the shelf find (also found a new set of discs for $10) at a local boneyard, crammed into a 4-1 header and clamped down. I repaired the leak that you see in the pic after this pic was taken. Replaced the bent stock bars with a pair of black superbike bars I had in the garage. Had to repair some wiring, new points, new battery, new sprockets and chain. Rebuilt the carbs, and rode it for the remainder of the summer, with no issues
