vibrating turn signal indicator?
« on: June 06, 2008, 08:26:40 AM »
i need to put an end to the horrible squawking sound of the turn signal buzzer on my cb750.  it's hard to love everything about something but absolute despise just one thing.  i've read up on some pretty neat workarounds for it.  the obvious: disconnect, and the ingenious: have it switched on only when the brakes are engaged.

so here's an idea, wondering if anyone's tried this, how it's worked out.  get 1 or 2 pancake style vibration motors, like this: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8449.  hook it into the turn signal wiring, and tuck it in under your grips or anywhere on your handlebars.  these are the motors that they use in pagers and cell phones, pretty strong, so i'm thinking it should do just fine, ie - be felt over the vibration of the road, running motor.

Slight correction, have it switched on only when the brakes are DIS-engaged.  That way while stopped it is silent, but still a reminder to all that it is signaling when getting under way.

My opinion, vibration is the enemy of electrical switches.  And, the bike already puts enough vibration into my hands.  Further, the one you've pointed to runs at 3V.  Bike has a 12V system.  Probably vibrate a LOT for a short while!

I kinda like the idea.

Finding a 12v motor that fits nicely into the handle bar is easy enough. Adding a counterweight to that motor is also easy enough.

If it is noticeable enough over the other engine vibrations (which I question) then it shouldn't be on for much time at all really and isn't going to hurt switches or wear too much on the motor bushings.

My thought was to add a blindingly bright LED in place of the stock dim incandecant bulb. Even on a sunny days bright LEDs should stick out.

I thought I read somewhere there is a unit engineered specifically for motorcycles to make the seat buzz with the turn signals (OK.. no requisite dirty jokes now...  ;D).

It could also be wired into the oil pressure light to get your attention a bit quicker...
