need oil pump seal. 78 cb550
« on: April 11, 2005, 04:28:39 PM »
Hi

I need a new seal for my oil pump. The problem is that it is sold as a complete oil pump assembly. I have to buy the whole part just to get that seal. I need the one directly behind the little cover with the 3 screws, not the other directly behind the whole pump. it's not even shown in the parts catalogue.

It is  slightly under 2"I.D. It's a FLAT harder rubber  seal 1/16" think. Would anyone of you have an extra pump kicking around thet you could part out??? or better yet, that exact seal???

I think that oil pump is used in the cb550 and the cb550F .

help???

Anne

Hi Anne, that flat hard rubber seal was once an o-ring! Faced with the same problem a few years ago, I went to a local hardware store, old seal in hand and found one that fit, if just a tad fatter than original. It all went back together OK, and no leaks after 10-12,000 miles. Good luck.

I just ran into this same problem a month or so back and it took some effort to find the proper-sized O-ring. I was going to order one from an O-ring manufacturer, but they have a $20 minimum, and I couldn't see paying $20 for a single O-ring. I eventually found one in the plumbing section of a chain hardware store called Orchard Supply Hardware. Seems to be working quite well.

However, the other day, I was in Pep Boys and saw that they sell a plastic box filled with assorted O-rings, including one that looks like it might work for that particular oil pump seal. The brand is Dorman, and the O-rings appear to be off high-quality, high-temp material.
