I think its the only ugly motorcycle I want.

        I was beginning to think that Yamaha was going to let the V-Max go away and that would have been a real shame, IMHO. ;)

They are fake air scoops. They came in the original V-Max as an styling touch and became so distinctive of the model that the new one couldn't exist without them.

I thought I read somewhere that the "Air scoops" on the 2009 actually function.


"more up to date with contours more muscular and an all new 1679cc engine with fly by wire throttle, functional air scoops and Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake (YCC-I) that shortens the intake tracts at 7000 rpm.

Because non functioning air scoops would be just ridiculous :D

I think the thing is simply amazing. love the original, this thing should flat out SCREAM!  wait till someone boosts that thing lol!

Very cool that Yamaha took the chance with this model. But the weight gain is disturbing, and there is something that is "off" in the styling.  The dual radiators in the front look tacked-on and overpower the front end.  I don't think this one will wear as well as the original.

Not the best looking bike I've seen but I wouldn't say it's ugly necessarily.  :)

Seems kinda silly to put non-functioning air intakes on there when they look that strange.  I like the ram-air intake idea though.  I've been trying to think of a subtle way to do it on my 400F.

 First one I rode (late 1984, right after London bike show) scared the hell out of me. unbelievably fast but wouldn't stop (difficult to do anything when the wheels are not on the ground ;)).
 Not a bike for bumpy roads.
 Almost ended up in church (but the wall stopped me  ;D)
Didn't do any damage luckily, (it wasn't my bike either)

There have been a few of various years around here and they always seem to go for the same price - Some where around twice as much as I seem to have.

In my opinion they are pretty damn ugly, but that does not change the fact that I want one bad. But maybe its because all the roads around here are straight...

On the originals, they had the "V-Boost" system that at a certain RPM and/or throttle opening, a valve would open between the carbs so that each inlet would be served by two carbs rather than just one.  This give a little spike in the torque curve that makes the bike feel more beastly.  But the "ram air" ducts were strictly for show and non-functional.  On the new ones, the ducts feed the airbox.

The one I rode had V-boost which opens around 5,000 allowing cylinder to use two carbs and a second butterfly in the middle of the 'V' so any cylinder could draw from all four carbs a 8,000rpm.
 Go hairy real quick but I think the new one is going to be even faster, 200.1 bhp at crank. There's a write up in this months Ride magazine.
