Resistor plugs and caps
« on: May 16, 2008, 11:45:59 AM »
There's been threads here lately about plugs and caps. Could 5k caps combined with resistor plugs cause a high speed misfire/ lack of power??

The definitive answer is...
Maybe

Are your spark plugs sooting up?

Just curious myself, what are the potential problems when you run resistor type plugs?

I have resistor iridium plugs and new NGK resistor caps on my CB500.  Bike runs great, no high speed misfire or fouled plugs.  The motor just sings up to the redline, pulling as hard as a 500 can.

Not much of an issue when everything is new.

Old plugs take more voltage to fire. Old points no longer optimize the spark voltage.  Extra resistance lowers spark voltage potential.
When the three effects are added, you get misfires/poor ignition, worse gas mileage, a bit less power.  So, you replace the spark plugs sooner, address the points more often, or get rid of extra resistance.
