77 CB 750 KF 12 hour build up!
« on: June 06, 2008, 01:44:54 PM »
Hello.  We've just finished up working on our project 750.  It is a '78 K frame, a '76 F engine, and 12 hours of constant assembly.  Less talk, more pictures:

Last November, before the original engine gave up the ghost:

Kool-Aide Pre-assembly break:(this is Tyson)

Rolling it out of winter storage:

Taking it to it's new "more loving" home:

This is the fastest the frame has gone since November of 07':

New home:

Inspecting the valves for imminent catastrophic failure:

Snug as a bug and ready for the build(<written by Honda? aka Tyson):

Super awesome valve adjustment time!:

Screw before "adjustment"

Screw after:

Cleaning the engine and can you see all three valve covers?

Re-united!

Wheeling the new powerplant over to the frame:

Love at first sight:

It's in!

Bolted up!

Dinner break, and the official purchase of the bike.  I paid 1 footlong sub for it!

Back to work, stripping the old K bottom end:

Points on:

Can you see what is wrong in this picture?(other than Tyson, that is)

More assembly:

Not sure what I was doing here:

Emergency Gasket: Cocoa Puffs Box:

Hard at work:

More work:

A hard night's work:

Finding out how much oil a SOHC 750 takes:

Complete(ish)

So, we did get it running, and I've got some videos up on youtube of the startup.  Overall, a rather quick assembly of the bike, and without major mishap.  Any chain and sprocket donations are appreciated... ;D

Videos soon.

Well done (great photos and report!) and looking forward to a ride report!

I did something similar with my K2 a few years back....rode the bike to friends house, started at 8am, removed the engine, split the bottom end, replaced the broken bearing retainer ring with a homemade piece (that 1000 miles later would need replacing  ::)), re-assembled bottom end, washed engine, painted engine and then re-assembled bike. All finished by 11pm. Rode 50 miles back to Boston at top speed. Home by 11.45am and discovered we hadnt connected the rubber hose at back of oil tank that goes to engine which explained the large pool of oil under bike when I stopped  ::)

Easy bike to work on really..whats next?

cheers
Andy

In vid #2 it sounds like you are running on 3 cyl ....which would be no wonder after all your kicking....Im guessing that early on you fouled the plugs. Too much kicking! Here is what I would do....

1. Take plus out and clean them or better yet - use new ones.
2. Gas on
3. key on
4. choke on
5. check kill switch is on run
6. check all spark plug caps are on.
7. twist throttle a 1/4 and release
8. kick once....wait 10 sec
9. kick again...should be firing almost catching...wait....10 secs
10. kick again...should be firing up by now
11. After 30 secs -2 mins close choke....should be firing on all 4 - check headers for all being equally warm....go ride  ;)

The way you are doing it by repeatedly kicking again and again and again....not going to do much except foul the plugs....been there done that....

Anyway...having said all that WELL DONE on getting this far!!

cheers
Andy

Cool build. Very quickly done.

Andy, how did you know that? I am getting better acquainted every day with these bikes but I never would have known that from a video.

Im guessing but listen to the exhaust sound...sounds ratty...like only firing on 3 cyl...Ive had to ride a CB750 home on 3-cyl for a 1000 miles so I have an idea.... ;)

Thanks for the advice Andy!  I was just excited to see if the bike would run...We got it running better after the videos.  I really need a new exhaust, too.  The baffles are mostly gone.

Tyson's 21, and I'm 19.  So yeah ;D

well done guys - you got a strong leg there...

more videos   :) :)

More videos as they develop ;)  Tyson has a modern standard bike (2001 Suzuki Bandit 1200), so we'll be going on many rides together.

Good work!  Now go for a ride! ;D

I need to get sprockets and a chain, and I need to do something with the exhaust, as I'm afraid the pipes might fall off :-[

More updates as they come...I'm probably going to try and find an older model gas tank, and I'm going to put some clubman-style bars and smaller lights on it.  It'll be pretty sweet... ;D ;D ;D

We need a chain and sprockets by the 19th! I got off of work so we're going to Sals bike night even if I have to tow your bike with mine!! :D

Oh and you want a new tank!? IMO it looks better with that tank....and I obviously have better taste than you. (repsol shirt>nintendo shirt)  ;D

About the clubman bars remember it still needs to be comfortable.

We're both on the Dane/Jefferson County border. Cambridge is the town.

"Have a delicious Huber for me, will ya?" maybe I am just tired but...huh? What does that mean?

Oh and I hope you are enjoying our latest wonderful tornado T-storm weather.  ;)

Huber, as in the beer that used to be awesome and cheap.  Made by the Joseph Huber Brewing Co. in Monroe before they turned into Minhas Brewing Co.  Used to come in returnable 8 packs.  Kind of an old reference, I guess.  Have a Leinie's then, I just miss good Wisconsin beer.

No no I'm a liquor guy (weird for Wisconsin)

And YES! Get that float bowl unstuck! Pull the sprockets off just to be ready for the new ones and I'll get the headlight bucket and stuff together for you. Give me a call for more info on that. I wish I could work on it with you but as always I have to work tonight.
