On the Road Again After 26 years sitting - '78 CB750F SS
« on: June 08, 2008, 11:07:29 AM »
I'll have to post a project report with pics eventually, but after 26 years sitting, I took her out on the road today for the first time.  A short jaunt to just let her run and heat up and wear in and see what might need further adjustment.  Lots it seems.
Still need a set of *used* brake pads donated if you have an old set.
in the meantime, I've removed the front left caliper and used the brake pads on the rear so I've got one front brake and the rear working well after rebuilds.
Found fuel dripping from the swing arm so it looks like I've got a prblem with the floats again... I thought I had it fixed.  Maybe a bit of 'something' from the tank found it's way through when I was meandering slowly on the local mountian road at my house.  Anyway, I'm not looking forward to pulling the darned carbs (again).  If it's only one carb, I wonder if I can drop the bowl with the carb in place.... tight clearanced under there...
The steering feels 'woobly" for some reason.... I think the rear wheel is out of alignment and I'll have to tweak it in with the adjusters a bit.  Also, haveing the front left caliper off may be effecting the fork 'balance' a bit.  I may have to tighten the triple clamp bolts a bit as well.
Still have no front brake light switch so the brake only lights up with the rear brake.  I'll deal with that one a bit later.
Found some brake fluid dripping from the front brake caliper and determined the bleed valve wasn't all the way tight (my fault).  And (damn it) I tried to bleed off a bit and squirted fluid all the way up and onto the tank paint....  I needed to touch it up anyway but geeze, what a rookie thing to do.
I think I'll start at the font and work my way to the back checking that I've tightened up every screw and bold... I might have missed a couple.
Anyway, if anyone has an old set of brake pads for a 77,78 F supersport, I'd take the donation.  Else, when payday re-plentishes my supply of green, I'll squeeze out a few and see if I can find a pair cheap on E-bay.  There are not shops close by up here and shop prices tend to be.... premium... in the montians.
No matter where you go, there you are.
