Hello from Devon, UK
« on: June 08, 2008, 02:24:13 PM »
Hi, everyone.

I recently acquired a 1978 CB400F - the f2 European model with the maroon tank. It looks to be in virtually original condition, well used but intact - nobody has monkeyed with it and everything works. Runs nicely too, though a rattly engine suggests some work may be needed soon. I may be looking for advice from this excellent forum in due course.
The exhaust pipes are the type that divide around the oil filter and go under, instead of wrapping around the top (see pics). Anyone know the history of the pipe layout on these machines? Was this a late design change? The 4-into-1 pipes seem to be the chief claim to fame of the 400/4.

I had better own up - my last bike was a 1955 Vincent Series C Rapide. I parted with that beauty back in, errm, …1971. Today, it must be worth 100 times what I got for it. As you can see, it’s taken me a little while to get around to putting the “A” category on my driver’s licence back to use. A Honda 4 with disk brake and electric starter seems like the very latest in technological wizardry!

One of the nicest things about picking up the biking threads again is the people you meet. I much look forward to meeting some of you here - and picking your brains, doubtless.

Welcome from Canada eh!

Beautiful Bike you have there.

The exhaust looks like a Marshall (http://www.cea.de/laser/data/56100203.pdf) but I believe the marshall's all have a plate on them saying so.

Welcome from New Zealand, nice wee bike there, good to know it hasd been in continuous use, some poor buggers on here find theirs after lying for 20 years in a paddock or stuffed in a barn as a chicken roost for a decade so you are way ahead there.
Not sure about 4 into 1's being original on any of the production Hondas but then I'm no expert and you are probably about to find out the definative answers from our resident panel of highly qualified experts.
                        Cheers........Hush. ;D

Hi James.

That's a Motad I'm afraid.

I say "afraid" because they are fairly common on SOHC bikes (and every other old Jap four I think!) mainly because they are the only "after market" system that meet the current noise regs - and they are one of the cheaper systems on the market. So quite common.

Unfortunately they sound cr*p. If I were you, i'd keep a lookout for a Marshall DeepTone or a Laser as these are far more in keeping with the late 70's. That's a Piper on the 500/4 in my avatar, but they don't exist any more.

If you want to meet like minded people you should look up Loonymoon as she's in your neck of the woods (although |i'm not sure whether her 350/4 is down there or not.)

Check out the UK people on www.honda-sohc.co.uk which looks similar, has a lot of common members, but isn't associated with this site (just sort of grew up in parallel and uses the same forum software)

Thanks for the info, Steve. Sorry to hear that my pipes are not Honda fittings after all. On reflection, though, I still think they look quite neat on the bike. More understated than the Honda design, but no worse aesthetically.

Regarding the music they make - point well taken. However, I suspect my neighbours may be tone-deaf in that department. Investing in a new set might just be wasted on them!

I think you'd have to go a long way to beat the original curvy headers.  They took the market by storm in 1976.
