Whats wrong with the Tricks and Tips section?
« on: June 09, 2008, 04:53:22 PM »
This is the best place I know where to post this, I'm still a pretty new member. Anyway, I was browsing through 'Tricks and Tips' and noticed a lot of threads that weren't about tricks OR tips, mainly people asking questions about this or that. And, there isn't any organization to it either. Wouldn't it be cool if it looked like this:

-Carburetor Tricks and Tips
-Fuel Tank De-rusting Tricks and Tips
-Engine Repainting Tricks and Tips

So on and so forth...

I guess, if it is an open forum, it can't be ordered in any kind of list form, unless, pages were created to join all the tricks and tips from other people, and then closed and kept organized? Anybody else think this is a good idea?

Hey, maybe this thread belongs in Feedback?  :)

Classic

It will now degenerate into something resembling "open forum"

Dave the reason is newbies.

The reason its empty is newbies that can't use the search function

Yeah, and why did he mention Carbs, Fuel tank rust, and Engine Repainting, but neglect to discuss these much more important Tips/Tricks:

Full-synthetic, diesel-specific oil.
How wide your Cheng-Shin tires (or tyres) can be on stock rims.
Wooden sidecovers (for us true old-timers), and where they are stored in the secret warehouse.

I haven't forgotten anything, have I?

;D ;D

Ok, I'm obviously missing something here because I'm not sure whats so funny  ???

Anyway, perhaps it would be best to just start with making a thread titled for example, "Carburetor Tricks and Tips" and then edit the opening post with the various tips submitted in an orderly fashion?

Not trying to open a can of worms, but when I need some info, I search for it, and ask if I don't find it. I dont' think the forum mods have to work (i.e. tidying up the section) to make life easier for the people who need the info. The info is there, if you need it, search for it. While you search for it you may find very interesting info along the way.

Well Dave,

We're just injecting a bit of humor...not directed at you btw....

The basic problem is...and I think if you look at the post county this will become evident...New members think that section is the place to ASK for tips...not post tips.

Theres some very basic questions that get answered over and over....because newbies don't search for the answer before just posting and asking.

And they often post in the wrong section.

I am not refering to you Dave. You just touched a nerve with your question and we kinda ran with it derailing your thread.

Thread hijacking is a favorite Old Timer thing and probably just as unproductive as newbies who don't search  ;D

"search function"...?!

I'm glad I read this.  I've been using cardboard all these years- I just never thought to make sidecovers out of wood.  >D'oh<

Ernie, the idea for using wood (specifically walnut) for sidecovers was broached in the famous "Walnut sidecovers" thread circa 1999/2000 on the old sohc@dorje mailing list.  ;D

Wow, Andy!  I didn't know you'd been around here that long.  I think I signed up back in 1994 or 1996 or something.  Remember the old days when we used to have to wait the whole day for the digest?  No pictures, no google!  We sure have come a long way!!!  Now the trolls can flame and run and come back in 2 minutes to see the replies!  And a search function!  Holy cow!  Wow, we've made a lot of progress!

Still got the same old bike, though.  But now it is called "vintage".  Back then it was just cheap Jap crap.

"search function"...?!

Ed the sohc@dorje mail list is still going  ;) Howard from Maine was asking a question the other day.....the old list was definitely smaller. Progress has been made with the photos now though.

cheers
