How to stop the clutch centre from turning
« on: June 08, 2008, 03:59:28 AM »
Hi,

I am trying to remove the clutch from my 400/4. The engine is out of the frame and I have locked the engine with a screwdriver through the small ends of 2 and 3. I have removed the 4 bolts and springs and am now left with the castlelled nut (sp?). When I try and remove this, the centre of the clutch turns with the nut  ??? How can I stop this turning? I can see a cog turning on the bottom left as I look at the clutch but I cant see what it meshes against so cant use a penny on it. What else could I use to stop this part of the clutch turning?

Any ideas?
Thanks

Block the drive sprocket from turning with a piece of wood.

Motion Pro makes a cluch holding tool, it looks like a large set of vise grips with fingers. Buy it and you will not have to risk damaging expensive parts.

for some you can make a chain whip with a short length of chain hooked to a short bar. wrap it around the sprocket and block it against the frame or use a longer handle and hold it. only needs to be long enough to wrap halfway around the sprocket.

A lot of holders I've used seem like tehe is a lot of damage potential, either from raising a burr or cracking something, holding the sprocket applies the stress on the part that's designed to take those forces in regular operation.

After fiddling with the gears I then realised the final drive was moving so I put the old sprocket back on and used the recommendation to jam it up with a chain.

All done and clutch now removed. Thanks for the ideas.

You know, this is a great tip.  I think this weekend I'll fab up a holding tool out of some bar stock and an old drive chain, seems like it'd be a useful tool to have.

cheers
