Henry Abe 900cc kit piston rings?
« on: June 09, 2008, 01:22:39 PM »
Does anyone know where I can pick up some piston rings that will fit a Henry Abe 900cc piston kit?

I would have told you they are non existent, except for those of us that have the kits, but very recently there were a couple sets sold on EBay (a rare occurence).

You may have to send a piston to Hastings, etc for sizing &/or piston cutting to get rings that fit. Be sure to keep us informed as to what your solution is.

Interested indeed. I'm struggling with lots of smoke on startup and deceleration and I think my rings are the culprits.
I have 60mm henry abe pistons in a 605cc overbored head that I can't get any parts for.

Hym,

I'd bet you have 1 piece oil rings. I just don't like 1 piece and prefer 3 piece. I've used 1 piece before and it used too much oil. I had Total Seal cut some 1080 pistons for 3 piece oil rings rather than use the stock 1 piece. They were unable to match them so they had to cut. I haven't gotten the bill so I'm not sure what the cost is. My local machine shop shipped them out and still has them so I'm sure there's an additional markup. Why not get in touch with Total Seal directly and see what it'll cost.

I do have one piece  oil rings. I'll look into 3 piece rings.

Hym, i think you can use 750 standard size on those but not 100% sure

reason I ask was...I saw some barrels with pistons for sale - used but in pretty good nick, despite a broken piston ring
on one of the pistons... But from reading how scarce they are to come by- I don't think buying it would be such a wise move.

Hym, the HA piston I have in a 550 are 61mm and will use the standard size 750 top two compression rings. Like RxmanGriff has mentioned I needed to enlarge the oil ring land a few thou to use the three piece 750 oil ring.

Are yours actually 60mm or might they be 61?

I got the kit from classic cycle parts online. The specs say 60mm piston diameter. I actually have a stock 750 top ring on one cylinder, after breaking the original a I installed it. I just sent an email to total seal asking the price of a set for the pistons, as the online supplier will not break up a kit to sell rings alone.

slight hijack**
My bike is running great,  but burning oil on acceleration and deceleration. with no leaks and recently completed head work I am beginning to think that its the one piece oil ring that's not up to the task.

I saw that ebay item. My kit is a 605cc, made for a 500/550K head. I think that one is for a 750 head.

I'm looking for a complete set of 4 3pc oil rings that I can use to replace the one piece oil rings I now have. Hopefully it'll only cost me the cost of the rings and another $47.00 for a new cometic head gasket. :P

These things can be moneypits...
