If you're going to paint it black again just rough sand and smooth down no further than factory primer. Nothing in a can sticks better than it and your paint will last a lot longer, especially in wear areas like the shifter cover.

If you want to make it shiny aluminum, well, I don't have a clue. I like my motors just like my oil....er, black!
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

A spray can of Aircraft Aluminium Paint Stripper/remover will do it. Nasty stuff though, be very careful with it. Spray on, brush a bit and hose off. I got some at the local auto parts store.
Careful with it!
Cliff.

hmmm, i dont want to get stuck with intentions that didnt come out right....Anway, how about repainting the block and then polishing the head and covers?  i like the look, but whats the best way to prep the engine for a second layer of paint? should i paint over the top just after cleaning and degreasing?  Also will the aircraft stripper eat my gaskets? THANKS!

Anything that is not metal should probably steer clear of the Aircraft Remover. It will definitely eat through everything, and make the job a lot easier for you, but it the aspect of gaskets, rubber, plastics, anything other than metal needs to again STEER CLEAR of that stuff..

I don't want to scare you away from using it, I used it to clean up my engine before polishing, and painting the fins. In fact while the engine was out, I sprayed the whole thing down and let it sit  a while and do it's thing, but still avoiding contact of wires, and what not that is around the engine..

good luck
