exhaust repair
« on: June 26, 2008, 07:44:50 PM »
I have found a used set of stock 750 pipes, plan is to repair small hole by welding (TIG) and have triple platted.

Local chrome shop looks pretty good, visited today. He gave me strict instructions for getting carbon out of pipes.  Diesel fuel and car wash nozzles for extended periods...

Anyone had old pipes chromed?

It can be a nightmare.. find someone that can show you they have done this..

You are lucky it is not a 2 stroke.

Next problem is, if you want it shiny.. easy..if you want it to look factory and not lose points in a show after putting out all that cash.. good luck..

it can be done but it id hard to get done correctly..

Thanks 754, I doubt i would enter any shows, want the bike just to look good.

My concern is durability.

Any idea of "a lot" of money?  Everyone is very cagey about the price.  I want to pay a fair price and do not have any basis to judge what I am told.  Searching this site I find one person who talks about 50 a pipe, seems cheap.

At 50 buxper I would jump at it!!

Another think that can happen is the lettering on the pipes and number can get  polished so that it is obvious it has been redone (not good on a showbike resto)

I've good a set of 341's I installed in 74. I have looked after them, and are perfect except that the chrome has worn thin and is yellowed.

The local chromer won't touch them because of carbon but would send them elsewhere to be cleaned first and would then rechrome....at $250 per.

I won't pay that so if you find this shop does a good job I for one would appreciate a phone number!
