Front Axle bearings
« on: April 11, 2005, 06:28:01 PM »
I'm trying to change my '75 CB 550K wheel bearings.  I've got the front wheel off and now am at the Bearing retaining ring on the disk side.
What's the trick to getting this off w/o damaging the ring and seal?
Does anyone know if I can still get replacement parts?
Thanks
Todd

See this recent thread of mine: http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=305.0 Scroll down to post #9

DO NOT try hammering on it with a screwdriver or punch (despite the factory shop manual showing exactly that in a photo).  It's so soft, that you'll tear it up in no time. You may be able to purchase the special tool from Honda. I also seem to remember someone saying they fabbed a tool with square bar. I also found penetrating fluid and heating the hub with a propane torch helped things along a bit too.

If you don't read this in time and manage to beat the retaining ring up, take heart in knowing you can pick a replacement up at the Honda dealer for ~$10. Unless you trash the threads in the hub. Good luck!!  ;D

You're not kidding about it being easy to damage!  A couple wacks with a punch sure left a mark!
I'll see what I can rig up or end up at the dealer.
Thanks
