not wanting to frighten you, but it could also be your primary chain, especially if your bike's got some miles on it.
In any case, to tension the cam chain, just put a spanner on the ignition rotor hexagon and put some light clockwise torque on it. with your other hand release the 10 mm nut at the back of the cam tower and then tighten up again.
Manual says to place the crank at some magic point but I believe that by holding the cranck against the valve spring presure you are more certain to take off all the slack. Works on my bike at least.
