Topic: 78 Honda 550K Cam Chain Adjustment

Hi folks,
I finally got a Title so I can register my 550K. I have it running pretty decent thanks to the folks on this list (TT rules).

I was looking for a good thread, possibly with photos (asking a lot) to do a cam chain adjustment. I've never done one before, and although the bike sounds pretty good I can hear a little chain action in there.

not wanting to frighten you, but it could also be your primary chain, especially if your bike's got some miles on it.

In any case, to tension the cam chain, just put a spanner on the ignition rotor hexagon and put some light clockwise torque on it. with your other hand release the 10 mm nut at the back of the cam tower and then tighten up again.

Manual says to place the crank at some magic point but I believe that by holding the cranck against the valve spring presure you are more certain to take off all the slack. Works on my bike at least.

err um...primary chain Where it be?

The bike has about 18,000 on it. It sat for 10 years or so. I downloaded the service manual and couldn't locate the page? But I do have a Clymer, so I guess I'll give it a shot.

Primary chain is between the crankshaft and the clutch, cases have to be split to change it. 18k isn't too many though, I doubt it's bad.
