You want your kid to get a job?  It is simple.  Don't give them a choice.  A job that requires some hard labor in lousy conditions is good for the constitution and reinforces the valuse of education.

....plus a flogging every day, whether they need it or not, eh Sparty? ;D

Derek, be happy that you live in a moderately closed community and that she may not be being exposed to the seamier delights of teen life that are prevalent on the mainland. Let her make her own choices.....but that the bike has to be paid for somehow......

What's wrong with her taking a well-deserved rest? Didn't she get an A? I assume she worked to get it.

When I was at school, the summer rest was our only prize. We worked during the school year so we didn't have to study during summer. Had I have to work on summertime, what would the motivation for studying be? In fact, working was the easy way out: you get your own money instead of having to live from your parents. The hard part was studying and not working, thus being economically dependent.

My parents paid for my driving licence -in Spain you have to take classes-, and they paid for my tuition. I'll do the same for my kids, as long as they show they are investing their time. If they don't put the time, I won't put the money.

I'd force the issue a bit - find her the crappiest job imagineable and make her do it this summer.
Next summer, I'm willing to bet she finds a job all by herself!

that movie wasnt even out then, i dont think. my hearse had moon discs, and purple, blue and silver flames painted on it. the car was charcoal colored. i think it got about 4mpg, weighed around 8000 pounds too.

Nah man Ghostbusters came out in 1984  :D

Didn't mean to offend you!  I though that hearse was the shizzle!  ;D

My parents made me get a job when I was 15.  I was framing houses all summer in the Tennessee heat.  I learned how to wake up at 4:30 AM and made $200 every 2 weeks (!).  That was more money than I knew what to do with...  Under the table, of course.  Gotta love the construction business  ;D

Send her to our house for the summer.  Consider it a "scared straigt" program.  She'll soon figure out what happens when you don't have ambiton nor drive.  Being incredibly good-looking, insightful, a delightful and entertaining raconteur (a-hem) doesn't pay the mortgage.  I've always identified eith the underdog, and now I'm one of them.

Dear daughter;  Be careful what you wish for.

I would give her 3 choices.

The Docks, Summer Camp for pay or volunteer work for a local charity for no pay.

I packed eggs and raked blueberries for summer jobs.  I guarantee I'll expect my two boys to get summer jobs when they're of age.   ;D

i was so bored with school that i got a job as soon as it was legal (14 or 15 i forget).  stocking at the deli.  that led to illustrious positions at the local ben franklin, dairy queen, and it led to my first car.  a 1989 caprice.  and i was a bank teller (still can't believe i did that. i quit spectacularly to play a show with my band when after putting in for the day off two months in advance, i was told someone else more senior wanted to go to the beach that day and if i didn't work that friday then i shouldnt bother showing up monday.  well i told my manager that he could take his bull#$%* job and shove it- and if he wanted joe to go to the beach so badly he could be a teller on friday.)  then i got a job telemarketing for a mortgage refinancing company because it paid $9 an hour and that was amazing, and every hour you got a ten minute smoke break.  but i never did sell a refinance because i knew i would be screwing some poor schmuck who was already on hard times.  and they still never fired me.

it was nice to have more money than i knew what to do with for the last time in my life, but my motivation wasnt really material.  i guess what motivated me to work through high school was the desire to be adult- i would work that angle with your daughter.  i saw high school as glorified babysitting and wanted to grow up as fast as i could to get out of there.  but all those jobs taught me was that the working world is just as arbitrary and useless.

i did love dairy queen though.  best job ever.  i remember being a 16 year old kid watching a 17 year old chick eat a frozen chocolate covered banana and thinking that work was not so bad.  i was working with a bunch of friends, and nothing we did mattered.  so much for jobs teaching you to be responsible.  i would go back in a second if i could still live on 5.15 an hour.  we had a blast and we only lit the roof on fire once.  (sorry george)

You could quit feeding her, hunger gets most folks moving.

I'm confident starving a 15 year old is illegal. Is here at least ;D

I suppose, but all your only obligated to give them is a roof over their head, clothing and food. If they want spending money, a cell phone, their own computer, movie money etc they should earn it. Thats the way I was raised, I helped pay my way though school, finished my BA in 4 years. I think working and earning my way though things gave me a better sense of ownership and I think I was better off in the end because of it.

Went back down to the Marina here today and got the nod that there is a place for her this summer if she wants it.
3-4 days a week.

Work hours 12:00 "noon"  - 6:00 pm or 8:00.   $10.00 per hour
She wanted to go berry picking with a friend up the valley earlier. I explained that 110 degree conditions on the fields 8-12 hours a day might not be as fun as working the docks for the tourists.

She has agreed without any more arguments. Why couldn't my dad have found a cool job like that for me ;D
I'm the best dad, I'm the best dad, I'm.tge. besg gsdt

sorry my kid came into the room ;D

The circled area is the "Boat Yard office" where my wife runs things ;D  She keeps an eye on everything that happens down there ;D
