Gas tank compatibility?
« on: October 31, 2013, 09:06:14 AM »
Will a 1976 Honda cb750f gas tank fit on a 1978 Honda cb750f? I really love the vintage look of the large exposed gas cap and am not a huge fan of the locking gas door on the 78'. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

A 1976 cb750F tank is nearly the same as a 1978 CB750F tank including the gas door and recessed cap. The only thing that is different is the petcock bung.

Did you mean a 1976 CB750K tank?

Oops, you are correct. Habit of typing "cb750f". Yes, I'd like to use the cb750K tank on my 78' cb750F.

The early K tank is an inch or two shorter than the F or the late K tanks, mounting points are the same so you'll end up with a gap between the front of the seat and the tank.

The switch from exposed caps to recessed gas door caps was done as a safety measure. In an accident the exposed cap had a tendency to douse the rider in gasoline. In the mid 1970's kawasaki got hit with a huge jusdgement when an h1 tank did exactly that the rider suffered severe burns, and by 1977 almost all japanese motorcycles had screw caps with gas doors.

That being said, if you are switching to a K tank, you need to change the seat and you can't use the stock K seat because the mounts are different. Since you would have to repaint the k tank anyway, maybe it is better to find a guy who can weld and do fab work and have him cut your gas recess out, weld the door in place, and then install a monza cap.

see this project pages 1, 6, and 7 onwards to see what I am talking about:
