MPG-CAPS
« on: June 13, 2008, 01:10:36 AM »
Had the bloke across the road knock on the door tonight, he started telling me about a new "incredible" product from a mob called FFI, Fuel Freedom International.
Its a pill you drop into your fuel tank that is supposed to increase your milage and lower emissions, he gave me a pamphlte (his number on the back, fubby that lol)  it reads (and i quote)

Quote
MPG-CAPS technology is a patented combustion chamber treatment. MPG-CAPS treat the metal in the combustion chamber by forming what is called a catalyst - a very thin coating - that alters the burning curve of the combustion making fuel burn quicker.

MPG-CAPS completely dissolve a few hours after entering your fuel tank. Carried by the fuel, the proprietary active ingredients in MPG-CAPS enter the engines combustion chamber, where under heat and pressure a chemical reaction occurs.

A micro thin coating forms on the piston and cylinder head surfaces, including the spark plugs and valves. The reddish proprietary thin coating acts as a surface catalyst for the fuel. This allows a faster and more complete fuel burn which gives you a host of benefits.

I`ve never heard if this stuff and i wont put any strange muck into my fuel, so i thought someone out there may have heard or used this stuff before, i dont want to go to their web site, it would be biased so i thought i would ask you guys. World wide experience at my finger tips.
Any thoughts

Never heard of it before, but searched around a little.  The only info I can seem to find that supports the claims is from people selling the product, and one "unscientific" test done by a local news show.  AAA did a test that did not back up the claims, but the manufacturer said they didn't use it correctly.

Sure AAA didn't. It drops in your gas, what more is there! :D I fail to see how that could be goofed up.
OH WAIT, they did not let it dissolve long enough! ;D

Yeah, the lack of readily available scientific data that supports the claims of the manufacturer doesn't instill a lot of confidence.

If it works, fine.  But what about the cellulose from the capsule?  It may not be much, but I wouldn't want any kind of gunk building up...

Yeah, did a google on it and the only positives were from "official" sites, the bloke came over today to see if i was interested in going to a meeting about it, i talked to him about what i`d found on the net and he went into salesman mode, but very quickly asked for the two sample pills back. Kinda makes you wonder why lol

Not sure about a "surface catalyctic action".  Another device that seems to make sense technical wise is the Pulstar Spark Plug.  It uses internal capacitors to hold the power until the air gap is ionized and then all voltage is released at once.  Not sure if I am willing to try it @ $24.99 per plug though they say it is guarantied to increase both HP and MPG by at least 10%.

What he was trying to do is get you to buy a distributorship. It is a multi level marketing scheme.

I wonder if it works equally well in all internal combustion engines, say a lawn mower engine, a modern v8, a Merlin A/C engine, or perhaps one of the old 1 1/2 lunger fishing boat engines, I personally would say its crap, this from the perspective of working on engines since 1963.

You know guys maybe its just because I'm old, but but didn't we see a round of these mileage improvers in the 30's? I'm sure I remember seeing adds for these sorts of things in my fathers old Mechanics Illustrated's, Popular Mechanics etc usually in the back section of magazines, I suppose its nice to see continuity with the past in the new batch of snake oil sales men.

Turns out it is actually a Mothball. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/06/tx_gas_pill.html

just like we must be careful in our "busting" of the mpg pill, we must be leary of your link too, bobby... nowhere in that article can i find "mpg-caps" or something to that effect.  we just don't know which "gas pill" they are talking about.

interesting link, hope... that station is called TMJ   ;D ;D  in the last part of the video, it says that the ingredients have been approved by the EPA to not harm your vehicle.  the station also got a substantial increase in fuel economy.

... not taking sides here, just trying to keep this in the scientific realm instead of just calling things snake oil... i'd have bought one just to try it out.  how can you test any of our ideas w/out the pill on hand?

The reporter also openly admitted that their experiment was in no way done scientifically.

As always, the burden of proof lies on the one making the claim, and so far as I can tell the company/people making these claims has yet to show any kind of scientific evidence that these pills do what they say they do.  I wonder what they're trying to hide. ;)  It's not up to others to prove that it doesn't work.

I heard that moth balls actually acted like octane booster in small amounts but if you put in too much, it was real good at burning pistons up.

Didn't think of that. But it could be reverse psychology....they get the rights, make their vehicles give poor gas mileage, then stop using them and presto they meet the 'new' mpg figures over night. But anyway, who is buying a gas pig out of choice these days?
