Horn
« on: June 09, 2008, 11:08:27 AM »
Hey, anyone wire up a single Fiamm without a relay? How'd it work?

I'm thinking of doing it on my 400; the replacement from a 650 isn't very loud.

Anybody?

Guess not.

I'm a little confused about the question, though.  Are you asking if anyone here uses a Fiamm horn that doesn't require a relay and how they like it, or are you asking if it's possible to use a Fiamm horn without a relay even though it typically requires one?

I know two fiamms require a relay. I don't have room for two  under the tank of the 400 without them being overly obvious, so I was thinking of just using one.

But guess no one on recently has had the same brilliant/odd idea.

The relay was done to protect the switch contacts.  Fiamms do take considerable more power than the stock one.

If you don't mind putting your horn switch at risk give it a try.

The twin Fiamms on my 750 and 550 don't work at all without the relay.  Just can't get enough power through the regular circuit/switch for them.

Okay, I'm not williing to risk my horn switct.

But I have another question - are there any loud horns available that are smaller than the Fiamms? The 400 is a small bike and the Fiamms off my BMW look massive on it...

I know what you mean about the look, but I decided to trade having an inconspicuous horn for the ability to wake up that car driver who's coming over into my lane.  Works great! ;D

Well, you're right of course. Doesn't matter how good the bike looks if you don't survive the ride. Dual Fiamms or Wolos next ...

whatcha honkin on Gordon?  does it really work?  i got a freeway blaster a while ago (and a relay) because i thought my stocker was shot.  wired everything up, but when i realized the problem was a dirty horn button, i switched it back to stock.  i am of the belief that people will probably still not wake up, and evasive maneuvering or situation avoidance in the first place, are my only weapons against the zombie cagers.  I act like I am invisible, and they act like they are trying to kill me.  So far this has been enough to make me avoid contact- I dont even use the horn until we are stopped at a light and i need to get their attention so i can show them the little birdie i have in my hand for them.  (its my middle finger  ;))

In New York, I probably honk about once a minute -- everytime I even think a taxi or ped or bicycle is going to swerve my way. More like the rest of the world (Asia in particular) where a horn is a friendly "watch out for me" rather than most of the states where the horn means a definitive "F-off".

I've got the dual note Freeway Blasters on my 750 and 550, and yes, they really work.  I still use my "enlightened paranoia" to keep myself alive on the roads, but I also use the horn liberally.  I'll honk as I'm hitting the brakes to avoid being side-swiped to at least let the driver know that there was indeed somebody there.  That way when I'm #$%*ing them out at the next light they know why. ;D

In most cases, though, I use it to let someone know I'm there before they attempt to kill me.  Like someone who's getting ready to pull out of a side street or parking lot, looking to the right, and inching forward like they may pull out in front of me at any second.  A quick blast from the truck horns makes them stop and notice me.

It's also really fun to tell an unsuspecting friend to give the horn button a little tap. :D
