I've got Hondaman's resistor pack installed with my accel coils and iridium plugs, and Oregon motorparts new V/reg and V/rectifier installed. once I had the wiring properly connected, she stared right up. I've got an odd rhythmical  vibration that goes away when I pull the clutch lever in, and returns as I ride. I put HD clutch springs in and wonder if that is the source.

I've got a little weeping at the fins; I have a Cometic head gasket and a new base gasket and o-rings installed, everything torqued to specs. so far I've only put about 2-5 miles on the bike but she sounds fine.

My Rieck'd (I'm thinking of suggesting to Oxford dictionary that they add this verb) head is performing very well. At start up and on acceleration I see a some smoke in my rearview mirror, but expect that it is just part of the re-breaking process.

WOW! I like the bike a lot. However, I LOVE the fairing. Good work making it all work.

Many thanks. I'm running a cooler from a 650 nighthawk and an adapter from Terry from Oz. so far I can't tell if I have cooling issues or not, I ran down my battery trying to start her without one of the wires for the ignition connected yesterday  >:(  I'm about to ride her to the University to grade some exams, so we'll see how it goes. My hope was to address cooling issues by means of the NACA ductwork above and the small intake on the right below.

Took a short 30 min. ride this evening, after the thermometer dropped down below 85 degrees... At start up and on acceleration its still smoking quite a bit. The bike isn't overheating with the fairing, or leaking any significant amount of oil, and once I get going at a steady speed the smoking ceases. I thought I had overfilled the crankcase, so I checked and removed about 100cc's of oil before this evening's ride. The oil read right on the top line of the dipstick.

any suggestions as to how to make the bike more memorable for its look than its smoky trail as I start from a green light would be appreciated  ??? ??? ???

Update**

I checked the oil level after the bike had cooled off a little, and its still just above the full line and clean.

the bike has new Henry Abe 60mm pistons, rings (one top ring is a stock 750K ring), overbored/honed sleeves with less than 2K miles on them, and a recent stage 2 head and Serdi valve job
done by Mr. Rieck. Based on these things, I'm assuming that compression is not the issue, nor valve guides. Could my one stock 750 top ring be doing all this?

After about 85 miles of riding this morning with my friend and his Ducati Monster, Here is the following update:

starts fine, Idles well, accelerates fine and holds road speeds with no problem. 65-70 mph @3K+/- a few rpms.

according to my friend, when riding behind me, she smokes a lot when starting from a full stop, and when I throttle up aggressively, or downshift to decellerate. as of yet, she's only been up to about 80-85mph in 5th, but I had lots of throttle left. at that speed she also smokes a considerable bit. when I'm cruising at about 60-70, no smoke at all.

I have put about 100 miles on the bike since the rebuild thus far.

Update:

after 125 miles on the bike, now my dipstick reads no oil... I'm going to go out later this evening and check again, but I expect that the level will be below the bottom line on the stick :-[

I hate to think it, but it sounds like oil is getting past a ring or two.

bad valve seals tend to cause smoke at start up and go away....... leaky rings after it gets warm and the oil thins out.

How about checking the plugs for oil? might narrow it down to one cyl.

 Matt.

Oh, And I love the look of the bike mate.  8)

Not much I can say, that hasn't already been said, but you HAVE done a great job on your bike. 8) ;) I just hope you can solve your oil lever and smoking problem without too much work, so you can get it back out on the road to put some miles on that beauty!

Thanks for the replies and the good thoughts. I'm going to disassemble the bike (upper and lower fairings) tomorrow and take off the tank so I can get a good look at the plugs. I got the #4 out this evening; it was in fair shape at the electrode but had some hard crud built up at the base of the threads. I used anti seize on the plugs when I put them in, so I expect the crud (which was dry and hard) is a combination of oil and anti seize.

In the event that I find the culprit cylinder is the one with the 750 top ring, I'll have to shell out for another cometic custom head gasket and at least one new custom top piston ring

all you guys running an overbore kit in your engine, be sure you can get replacement parts...the online store that sold me the overbore kit won't part with any individual parts, hell, they won't even reply to my emails! so I'm $ssed out till I can get in touch with Wiseco or somebody like that for a new ring.

On a happier note, today's ride was great. My Ducati friend is also a photographer, so he hooked me up with 50+digital photos of the bike--a few of them are on the BOTM thread for this month. Its 95+ here in MD midday, so leaving early this morning we were able to get in a good 80 or so miles before I witnessed birds combusting in mid air from the heat. the fairings didn't make the engine overheat and the oil cooler did its job. when I get this one final problem solved, I believe I'll have a runner...

Update**

Checked all the plugs, all were light brown with no wet deposits.

I'm going to top off the crankcase and see if the same things happens after a ride this afternoon as did yesterday.
