Question about ring end gap CB750
« on: June 14, 2008, 01:20:39 PM »
I just got a set of rings off ebay for my 76 CB750k, the box is marked MC so not sure who actually manufactured them, but anyway.  The original rings used a 3 peice oil ring, this new set of rings came with a one peice oil ring.  My question is, what should I set the gap at on the oil ring?  I've searched on here for a while and only found specs on the compression rings.  The ones I got were tight, at .008, so I set those to .016, I haven't touched the oil ring yet, but I check the gap and it was .008.  Also should note this a std. bore.  One more question about the one peice oil ring, does it matter where I put the gap of the little spring type ring that fits behind the oil ring, I figured it will move around anyway, but didn't know if there is a specific way to install it.  Thanks alot for any help

You are going backwards with the 1 piece oil ring. I'd replace it with the OEM 3 piece.

yeah I know the 3 peice is better, however I already bought these, and gapped the compression rings, so returning them isn't an option.  I know honda used a one peice in the earlier k's and in some F's as well, so I figured it can't be that bad.  Anyway, does anyone know what to set the one peice oil ring gap to?  And does it matter how the little wavy spring fits in behind the oil ring?  Thanks alot

I know you bought those rings and can't send them back now but take it from those of us who had no choice but to use these one-piecers in the early days, #$%*-Can them and go to your Honda dealer and order a new OEM set with the far superior three piece oil rings, you won't regret it.

If you're bound & determined to use what you have, Honda says serviceable within 0.028". I used to figure 0.018" was a good number for those things, some went slightly less.

thanks for the replies, how does the little wavy spring fit behind the oil ring, or isn't there a certain way to put it in.

*slight hijack*

I've posted recently on oil burning issues and a newly bored head. Would end gap be the type of detail a machinist addressed in the overbore and refit process? can I address these issues now after about 2K miles?

I've contacted Total Seal about a new set of rings for my overbore pistons. BryanJ and perhaps others have commented that the top and middle rings for standard 750K pistons will work. Does anyone else with a henry abe 605 overbore kit have experience with the useability of these rings on this kit? they would save me a lot of $$, making it necessary only to get a 3pc oil ring made for each piston.

Finally, however I arrive at new rings in this engine, I assume that the sleeves will have to be re-honed before rebuild?

many thanks,

hym

Can anyone tell me how the little wavy spring fits behind the one peice oil ring, does the gap go to a certain spot?
