I think mine's longer than yours, but I might be wrong?
« on: August 21, 2005, 08:24:53 PM »
Ok, I had this problem with both of my "K" bikes (CB750 K1 and K3) with drum rear brakes, I have to tighten the adjuster nut on the brake rod all the way up before the brake starts to take up? Hmmnn, now before you say "Yer brakes are worn out, ya dummy!" I've measured the brake shoes and the linings, they're well within spec.

Now I took off my brake rod that I bought on Ebay and replaced it with one from a Suzuki dirt bike which is about 3 inches shorter, and voila! (that's French) The brakes are perfect, I only need to screw the nut on the brake rod in about half an inch or so before it takes up.

The brake rod I bought is 23.5 inches long, (total length) so I'm wondering if you guys know how long it's supposed to be? Oh, and I think my penis is longer than yours....................... Cheers, Triple S. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Your French is pretty good Terry.

Better than "Number13" (unless he's talking about a large violin)

I had the same problem but just moved the rod around on the splines. As long as you keep a good angle on the lever it's fine.
When I first got married, my wife laughed & said "who do you think you'll please with that?"
I said "ME"

Terry, although the linings are within spec NEW ( I realise that spending money on new stuff goes against the grain!) ones would cure your problem. Was a common thing at servicee to turn the arm round a spline or two but you may have to file a spline out of the arm. Try it and you will see what i mean

It's not the length it's the width that counts, after all it has to screw into your nut. ;D

No dice Bryan, I've got new ones in a box and there's bugger all difference between both sets. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I just turned mine arround 180' and converted it to cable operated, much better. Then again it did start life with a rear disc.

Ah Terry are those new ones ebc by any chance? If new ones still have a lot of movement either the drum is worn or the cam is. BOTH of these although technicaly possible I have never seen on a 750

Hey Bryan, how'd you know that? I went out to the garage and checked the box, and you're right, they're EBC! No good?

Hey Dave, I can't move the lever around on the splines, there's a "block" cast into the splined shaft on the pivot to stop you doing just that, i used to do that on my dirt bikes when I was a kid, but sadly it's "no dice" again with that suggestion, unless I attack the splines with something mechanical! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Terry all you need to do is file one or two splines out of the inside of the drop arm to be able to move it round, only takes a couple of minutes with a small file---just make sure you take the ones from the correct side. Used to do this all the time back in the 70's and it dont weaken anything. EBC tend to manufacture to the smallest of the sizes allowed, if you can get them Vesrah are better. Have fun Bryan

Terry, did you measure the INSIDE of the brake housing? IE, is the drum inner diameter too large. If yes you need to replace: step one, take rear tire rim off, move to side, buy new bike. Viola! Problem solved.  Actually, you could also do this: Take a piece of thin  metal (like a cut hose clamp piece, and wrap it around thepivot bolt (where the brake ends meet), and rivet it together so it doesn't fall out. It works, but check the spec's on the drum itself if you want to be sage. Yes, I meant sage. michel (ps Commonweatlh peoples thingies are longer than the Homelander's (england) ;D, at least that is what a local expert says)
