turn signals with small bulb
« on: June 04, 2008, 07:53:41 AM »
i am replacing my turn signals and i'm not sure what to go with.

I have read on here, if i put LEDs my signals will probably not work, because they draw such a small load.
What if i use signals with small bulbs? i am thinking of using something like these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4X-MOTORCYCLE-TURN-SIGNALS-HARLEY-KAWASAKI-HONDA-YAMAHA_W0QQitemZ280232568123QQihZ018QQcategoryZ35598QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

would they work ok? or is the load too small and they wont work?

With the original flasher can you need 2 x 21 watt bulbs plus the 3 watt idiot light or you dont get a flash
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Just go to your local auto parts store and grab a 2 pole electronic flasher unit, cost you about $5-$10

search "flasher relay" and read hundreds of posts about a $5 part from pep boys.  when you get it and it has three posts, ignore the one labeled "P"

i bought a flasher from autozone... i bought one w/ three connections.
'+', '-' & 'L'  are what's labeled on it... i may have gotten the wrong kind... ??  :(
is this the right kind i need? do i go get a 2 pole relay?

i found the green wire that can be used for the flasher. i read in another post that "it's just waiting to be used"
there's a white, black, and that green wire. how do i wire it up? i tried it a few different ways but i have no signals right now, waiting to get them in the mail, so i can't really test it without any load on it, right?

i am not very good with electrical stuff, but wanna learn...  :-\

I would go with + to the black wire that was on the original flasher, - to the green wire hanging loose, and L to the other wire on the old flasher. That should work. A 3 terminal flasher is better in my opinion.

well i've been trying to get my damn signals working.  :-\
there is a black, white, and a green wire there to use to wire the signals...

i went to auto zone and bought the black, squared one. tried every combination possible to get it working. nothing worked... i thought maybe it was the relay. i remembered the packaging saying "replacement relay for dodge trucks..." or something...
so, i went and bought another one, the grey circular one. it says "variable load relay" on the packaging... i wired it up and nothing happened. I then tried a few different ways and somehow managed to get all the lights on the bike to flash, minus the turn signals. the speedo, tach, neutral, and tail light were all flashing at the same time when i turned the bike to ON. i didnt even switch the signals on. i tried connecting them differently, and nothing.

i'm so confused. electrical stuff boggles my mind..   ???
time to go pull off my carbs....
