Air filter advice
« on: June 14, 2008, 06:21:58 PM »
Due to running rich problems, I have removed my stock factory Honda air filter from my stock air box with cover. Still running the cover but no air filter. Cured my running rich issue, air filter was plugged.

I have ordered an aftermarket air filter ($12) The owner of the shop seems to remember the aftermarket air filters available are too restrictive and cause rich running issues and to buy the Honda one, but for $12, worth a try. He also seems to remember they fixed this but not sure. Has anyone encountered this? I will try running without airbox cover.

Since removing the air filter, My bike is running better than ever before. I thought it was running well with the Honda filter (when it was new), but WOW, runs great! Checked my plugs, good at low-mid rpm, just a little lean in the higher rpms. How much different are pods from airbox with no filter? I assume the pods will have added restriction compared to the airbox. (unless the airbox cover is restrictive?) How good are those cheap silver "chrome" pods on ebay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-UNIV-POD-FILTERS-42MM-CB650-KZ900-GS750-GS1000_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35597QQihZ010QQitemZ200230749498QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Any comments or concerns?

I am considering the change to pods simply because it makes the carbs easier to remove. I have spare air boxes and thinking of cutting out the front of it to protect the pods from cross wind and so I can mount the airbox chrome covers.

From what I've read here, the pods make the carbs a royal PITA to tune!  Then there are those that say it's not THAT difficult, just very time consuming, and requires an array of various jets before you get the right combination.  I'm using a K&N stock-type filter in the stock air boxes on both of my 750F's, and noticed an improvement in performance, without having to re-jet.  Maybe you would want to consider one of those.  They're washable and they come with a "million mile warranty". (the usual "not affiliatted with K&N" disclaimer applies here  ;))
