I have a shop manual but no owners manual yet for my 75 750k.  I am trying to determine the correct method to check my oil level.  on back stand with engine running or not?  I am embarassed to say i have owned several but its been 30 yrs. ago and i have forgot.  Can anyone clue this old timer in on how to properly check my oil on the 750?  thanks, ed

Hi Ed , the correct way is to run your engine for 5 mins then stop it, then undo the oil tank cap and and just let it rest on the top of the neck, let the oil settle for a minute then check level on your dipstick  ;) hope this helps cheers mick.

I think the most accurate method is to run engine for a few minutes and check while still running or immediately after shutting  off  so that any possible trouble with the oil leak stopper valve will not contribute to a false reading.    Rock On

You got 'er Ed.  Real important to be sure it is warm.  Like maybe after a ride.  If you check it cold you may get that false reading that shows it is low.  That is because some oil can seep out of the oil tank and into the pan.  Then you put in a quart thinking it is low.  Then you start it up and blow oil all over the place.

I have always wiped the dipstick and screwed it on and unscrewed it and checked it. Can others confirm I have been doing this wrong for 36 years. Dan

Whaleman,if you have a wet sump Honda, oil is checked by placing dipstick into crankcase but NOT screwed in.  Rock On

I have a 1972 CB750. Is the level on the side oil tank checked without turning in the cap?

Is this the case for the 500/550?

Whaleman, you confused me when you said you screwed the stick in.The oil tank level is checked by inserting the dipstick/cap fully into the tank.It is not necessary to lock the cap to get correct reading.Trust your 36 year plan. Hymodyne, insert stick but do not screw in for correct reading.    Rock On
