Do you believe in g.ho.st?
« on: June 15, 2008, 03:30:27 PM »
As a computer numb nuts I wonder what the more savvy people think of this.

Is it the future for the internet?

Virtual machines and processing have been on the rise for years.  Makes sense.

In a way it's the ultimate expression of "separate interface from implementation", no?

I had WebTV once upon a time (quit laughing!), is this anything at all like that?

I don't think it is "the future". I would not rely on a external media for my important information -you never know when they can switch the server off-, and , furthermore, you need a browser to access it so no matter how good g.ho.st is, you still need Internet Explorer -or the lesser evil Mozilla-.

I see services like this being used more as just extra storage space.  Like instead of going out and buying a bigger hard drive, you'll just pay for some extra space on a remote storage system that you access securely through your internet connection.

never in my most stupid, retarded filled moments would i think of putting some of my computer files outside of my physical reach.
unless you have no private computer files, this new-fangled-ness should never totally replace your own computer.

isn't it bad enough that they can retrieve our emails at any given point, and will and have if they so choose?

Can you let me know the next time you feel one of those moments coming on?  I'd like to be there for it. ;D ;D

p.s.  Do those moments usually start out with the phrase, "Hey y'all, watch this!!"? :P

I have similar concerns about my files being out of my physical reach. WebTV always had me a bit nervous in that regard. But for some this might be the most practical solution.

For me the biggest issue is security; don't want strangers knowing exactly what type of German porn I've been sampling.

Still, I'd like to know more and see where this goes.

Right now at least, I couldn't see myself handing over all of my computer functions and file/memory storage to some third party, but for extra storage space for things like large video files, etc. it makes sense.  Many people are already taking advantage of this type of online storage without even thinking about it.  Chances are you have emails that have been saved in some web-based email provider inbox for a long time, but you don't have copies of them saved on your hard drive.  And services like Photobucket and Flickr have been around for a while for picture storage.

I'm both encouraged and uncertain about the two parties involved with g.ho.st.
