I was hoping to post this upon finishing my project, but I just couldn't wait..

Paint stripped, bodywork underway:

Sure looked like it was coming out as it should and looking right.

You can pick up one of those plugs at Home Depot or the such. They use them in plumbing to pressure test lines after assembly, or to just plug a hole to keep out construction debris (I've seen them used both ways). That's like the ultimate rat rod chopper gas cap!

You can pick up one of those plugs at Home Depot or the such. They use them in plumbing to pressure test lines after assembly, or to just plug a hole to keep out construction debris (I've seen them used both ways). That's like the ultimate rat rod chopper gas cap!

It's just an Oatey expanding pipe plug (forgot what size range). I kinda like the idea of the "RatRod" gas cap! (I already have a nice OEM cap waiting to go on it...)



You can kinda read the wording on the plug, it's a bit blurry, though.

And back on the bike (the trims on the bottom are not fixed on the tank yet, they are just hanging on, so they are crooked right now):









The paint came out really good. The stripes could have been a tiny bit straighter, as I think they are supposed to be more parallel with the bottom of the "Honda" logo, but considering I've never done large decals like that before, I'm just happy I didn't totally screw them up!

Beautiful.  I don't want to rub salt in a wound, but I think you're right about the stripe.  It looks right on the table, but doesn't look quite right on the bike.  Might be the trim...

So what kind of paint booth did you use and what spray gun set up? 
It looks great.  I have a 76 in the garage I would like to paint right now.  You just gave me some inspiration!
I have only sprayed acrylic urethane with HVLP...any idea of how this paint goes on compared to something like that?

It's an 11/2 Oatey test plug, though all brands are basically the same.  Costs under $5.  (I'm a plumbing wholesaler with nothing better to talk about).  And to think I just stuck a rag in my tank when I painted it.

I didn't do the painting.. a friend of mine did it for me (he's restored cars and such). I had to layout the masking and the decals, as he told me up front he's done vinyl graphics before and he swore he'd never do them again...
