Rattle Can Redoux - '79 CB650
« on: June 18, 2008, 01:04:03 PM »
I had a little free time at work today so I figured I'd do a little work on my bike while it's here. These are original side covers. I was going to try to match the paint, but after a fruitless search, I decided on flat black. If you ask me, it's not bad for a rattle can and about 30 minutes worth of work. :)

My tank will take a lot more work; I have to bang a dent out of the right side. Then it's on to the engine.

Probably not 'cause the tank needs a dent banged out and has to be sanded down; the paint is a lot rougher.

Between 3 & 4 all I did was spray paint with gloss white. If you look closely on pic 3, the "CB650" is covered with tape; I simply covered everything that I didn't want white and spray painted what was left.

Hey they look massive.
Same as you I need to paint my CB650 tank and its gotta be tough paint in case of petrol spills.
How are you going to redo your decals?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the tank yet. I'll probably have to body putty the dent in the tank, which I've never done before. I'm worried about trying to take the decals off the tank; I don't want to strip the screw heads out (they're rusty) or put a hole in the tank. I might consider working around them like I did on the sidecovers, but I doubt I'll be able to get as close without taking them off.

If you use a very small drill bit you could probably remove the heads from the tank badges and then get the rest of the screw with vice grips.
I'm betting those wee counter sunk screws are very hard to get too!
Nah it's that flash swirly striped decal I want to put back on, I think they are stick on ones and I have seen them on Ebay for sale but only in the states so that usually means out of my reach.
I've got a trick car painter in the extended family who says he can reproduce anything so maybe he might get the job.
