A little late with the update, we had a shortened session on Sunday. But I've been working on things throughout the week so time served. With the carbs buttoned up, we noticed a couple of needles had some shellac on them. A toothbrush with "goofoff" shined them up.
Admittedly I've wimped out on the carb rebuild. I was not going to undo the lift mechanism just for the sport of it. It worked when I rode it, and shows no reason it won't work now. The soda cleaned everything spic and span, a thourough rinse removed it all. A litght oiling. We did remove the float bowls and all the brass, thouroughly cleaned all jets, holders, float valves, and passages. The size/number of each has been noted in notebook. It would be the ultimate of luck that we won't need to change some when run time actually comes. The escape hatch on the bottom of each float bowl allows for changing mainjets without removing the floatbowl.
Refresh may be better. But I think we've got workable carbs. Stashed in a garbage bag, ready for the shelf.
At a members suggestion, the black lever is soaking in Oven Cleaner to get the anodizing off.
nasty stuff.
And finally, back to the MC itself. At which point we've run out of time. Of all the things I've ever done, I've never rebuilt a MC and I'm procrastinating. I've had MCs fail on me, but I've always bot good used replacements rather than rebuild what i had. So this is new. I know I read where many of you have rebuilt them, piece of cake. So its a hump for me.
So, rejuvenation time. I'll be missing this weekend update, heading out Friday AM on the mighty FJR to a meet with the MSTA (Motorcycle Sport Touring ASsoc. ) These guys are many ex-racers, current Iron Butt riders and other serious sorts. serious equipment and serious skills. I'll be shaking out the cobwebs myself but looking forward to it. In the sub-mountains of West VA. See ya when I get back.
