I got a set of those chrome gauge covers for Christmas this year.  My gauges were looking rather tired and the rings really gave them some needed bling.  You don't notice the faded faces and rusty backs as much now.   ;)  Great "bling for the buck" and install in 5 minutes or less.

I think mine came from cyclexchange.net.

Hi Indy: Covers look great.

Shop day was consumed with a detail that needed addressing. We are trying to knock off all details b4 the engine parts come back from Mike. Once the engine is rebuilt, I'm hoping there's nothing left to do to it except ride.

Reading BrandenK4s thread, he just had to address this issue. The fork ear was hitting the tank at full lock left. Either the tank/frame combo was at fault, or like me, it was bent.   He drilled and tapped the opposite fork stop lug. Threading in a bolt, the head of which shimmed out the lug, and the problem solved.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=103818.225

Coincidentaly, I've had the same problem on mine for 20+ years. My left side lug was bent in a crash. This allowed the fork ear (same as Branden is using) to hit the rt side of the tank. I lived with it as full lock right is a very rare event and that tank was dented, so no more harm would come of it. I forgot about it.

Now that I have a pristine tank with (my) dream paint job, we rediscovered the problem and needed to fix it. But I wasn't relishing removing the headlight and brake hose block to get a drill in there.  We scoped it and determined if we were careful we could drill the lug from the back side rather than the front. It would require a good centerpunch, as the backside of the lug is curved and the bit would drift. Also, we would need to guess the angle so the exit point would put the bolt head where it needs to be.

rt side contact

back side of lug

first hole too low: second hole right smack on! see drill mark in gold frame stop.

we'll fill the lower hole with JBWeld or equivalent. Since the top hole was so accurate, we reduced the bolt size from a 6mm to a 4mm, allowing a much smaller tapped hole.

sharp drill bits help. we had to break and run to Lowe's to get some.
no more contact

The proper fix would have been to source a new lower tree. But the one I had was already chromed. And now has the tapered bearings race on it. So a new lower tree will wait for a winter swap out.

Next to fiinish installing case studs. Then I think I'm ready. Better make sure I've got new ORings.

Mike called with a progress report. But I don't expect them back for 2 to 4 weeks. I'm sure we'll dig up another chassis detail to sort.   :D

Picked up the head today after having the intake seats bored out for the OS valves.....nice deshrouding top cut as well. Waiting for the new sleeves (tomorrow I hope). New rings arrived yesterday. Do some chamber work tomorrow.

Great news! But set your own pace. I know you have lots of steps to coordinate.

On my part I promise, that once received, I won't set the parts on a shelf for 8+ years b4 installing them.  Like I did to the first set of parts from RES.   :D

Maybe I missed it or forgot, are you increasingly the displacement (new pistons) or just correcting clearances with new sleeves?

Warning Will Robinson.

Do not fit those engine mount bolts that tight.
You are asking for real trouble.
Honda has stated that the engine cases of the CB750 expand .004-.0019 thousandths of an inch!

It is very risky to fit the bolts that tight.

IF the engine cases cannot expand the aluminum case will crack.

Thanks Lucky, I'll keep that in mind.

Rafster:
We're waiting on a new top end from MRieck. I don't mean to sound like it's overdue, it's just where we are.

In the meantime, we are sorting every single detail we can before recieving the new cyls and head for reinstall.   When we had it running last summer, there were still several things left undone. all have been chronicled in the thread up to today. We reworked the centerstand stay. Its now adjustable, to suit the different, mostly lower shocks.

I got a new torque wrench from CDI a Snap-on Company.

ITs a clicker. While I've wanted one for a while, the incentive was retorquing the main bearing bolts. Pretty hard to do with a beam style wrench. So we did that job today. Got a new 10mm "deep offset" wrench as a result of a "adjust my valves" thread. I think it will help, as though I needed any.   ;)

Pulled the oil pan to check the filter screen. Nice and clean. IS it just me or is one of the pan bolts really hard to get a wrench on? Thinwall socket too?  I got it off but chipped it doing so.  :(

Taking a second centerstand to machine shop tomorrow for shotening.

Got my 5 hours in. Received Titanium Retainers and APE Valve springs from APE. So I went for re-assembling my head, something simple I know I can do. To review, I had my head ported and a 5 angle valve job by Ron R at Racing Engine Services in TX. I don't know if he's even there any more, it was a strong referral from a friend who built a AHRMA successful CR750 Replica. he was proud enough of his work to sign it:

There are some schools of thought on this. One it used to be "port and polish". But RES and Yoshimura both gave me heads with the machine marks in them. No more polishing they say. My first head was done by an individual (the bike in my avatar), who had worked for Yosh and it was polished to a mirror. Hmmmm  The other issue is with the combustion chamber. Once again, RES and Yosh did not touch the chambers. The individual and the 70s CB750 article from Branch Flowmetrics (which is floating around this site here somewhere) both made the chambers like a "hemi". Branch claims 26% more flow. They are still in big time business doing Harley Heads. I'll just run what I have.

and the date is 1-00. As the title to this thread USED to say, "Restart of stalled project..." I had a lot of things done back then, but for personal reasons got stalled out and stored it all away. The head had surface rust on the springs and overall grunge, so i disassembled it.

It had been assembled with HD springs and stock retainers. So in this iteration, I opted out for the Ti retainers. they are 8 grams vs 13.3g for the stockers! This is important weight as it is reciprocating. But the retainers wouldn't fit my springs. After consult with APE, as they thought they should fit, I decided to buy their springs. I am on a budget of sorts, but was able to sell superfluous unnecessary parts to cover the costs. And glad to do so. The APE springs were obviously less bulk, about 40% lighter, though I forgot to write down the weights. I gave them the squish test and seemed to be everybit as strong as what I was going to use. Anyway, I feel good about the upgrade and can hear my cam heave a sigh of relief.  The valves are Manley Stainless Steel from Phaedrus I, stock size. Even though they had 50k miles on them, RES said they were in fine shape and we used them over.
We also used the old style exhaust guides that don't hold seals. This was done on the K0 for less valve train friction, so me too. While there is the issue of smoking on downshifts, I can't see it so why care?  :)  I did put upgrade VITON valve seals on the Intake side. Viton is upscale seal rubber and they come with a metal jacket as well.

I tessted all valves with the old Kerosene in the port test. I didn't have any kerosene but I had some chain cleaner from years ago (current rides don't have chains. My GT650 does, but sadly it hasn't seen much road time) which is mostly kerosene. I went to reach for it on the high shelf, knocked it off and even though plastic, the brittle bottle shattered and that took about an hour to thoroughly clean up.
My crank wouldn't fit in the box to my satisfaction, so I'm waiting on the rotor puller from Bike bandit I ordered. Then I'll get my crank out to APE.

PS: I like this shot for its aesthetic value:

God.....you should see this thing now. I'll let you take the the pics Ron.

Geez, you had to dig clear back to 2008 to quote that post!

In the meantime,  finally got the spare centerstand to the machine shop to have its legs cut off 1.5".  Should help hoisting it on the stand with the shorter shocks and 17-/70 tire/wheel.

The adjustable sidestand from Soupy's is so cute...

Just got the call, my centerstand is done. Drat, won't get to pick it up for a few days.

The (maybe) last thing for Saldana Racing Products to fab for me will be a chain lube guard. But I figure they'll have to have the bike for that.
