Hi Indy: Covers look great.
Shop day was consumed with a detail that needed addressing. We are trying to knock off all details b4 the engine parts come back from Mike. Once the engine is rebuilt, I'm hoping there's nothing left to do to it except ride.
Reading BrandenK4s thread, he just had to address this issue. The fork ear was hitting the tank at full lock left. Either the tank/frame combo was at fault, or like me, it was bent. He drilled and tapped the opposite fork stop lug. Threading in a bolt, the head of which shimmed out the lug, and the problem solved.
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=103818.225Coincidentaly, I've had the same problem on mine for 20+ years. My left side lug was bent in a crash. This allowed the fork ear (same as Branden is using) to hit the rt side of the tank. I lived with it as full lock right is a very rare event and that tank was dented, so no more harm would come of it. I forgot about it.
Now that I have a pristine tank with (my) dream paint job, we rediscovered the problem and needed to fix it. But I wasn't relishing removing the headlight and brake hose block to get a drill in there. We scoped it and determined if we were careful we could drill the lug from the back side rather than the front. It would require a good centerpunch, as the backside of the lug is curved and the bit would drift. Also, we would need to guess the angle so the exit point would put the bolt head where it needs to be.

first hole too low: second hole right smack on! see drill mark in gold frame stop.
we'll fill the lower hole with JBWeld or equivalent. Since the top hole was so accurate, we reduced the bolt size from a 6mm to a 4mm, allowing a much smaller tapped hole.
sharp drill bits help. we had to break and run to Lowe's to get some.
no more contact
The proper fix would have been to source a new lower tree. But the one I had was already chromed. And now has the tapered bearings race on it. So a new lower tree will wait for a winter swap out.
Next to fiinish installing case studs. Then I think I'm ready. Better make sure I've got new ORings.
Mike called with a progress report. But I don't expect them back for 2 to 4 weeks. I'm sure we'll dig up another chassis detail to sort.
