We had lots of Ace Hardware stores in AZ where I lived (Tucson and Sierra Vista) but they are hard to come by here. Ace is reknown for having lots of obscure stuff, or able to get it. Closest one I've found here is 25 miles away and I've not ventured over there when they were open.
Enjoy the day off and a warm cup of coffee/tea/chocolate...

The battle of the big box v the mom and pop has become the battle of the big box v the franchise (ACE). Lowe's is closer to me, now. But they don't have chrome and very little stainless. Still I buy big(ger) tickets from them.

The closest ACE closed (sad, 1 store couldn't compete) and the next closest ACE is 4 more miles away. (7t) Owned by a mini-chain that has 4 ACE stores on NS of Indy. But, they have chrome hardware.

I feel guilty sometimes and throw a bigger ticket ACE's way. But, capitalism is what it is, human nature.

I accidentally cut the 2 rr turnsignal/fender mount bolts, too short. Not allowing space for the rack mounting tab. That's 2 x $3 ea.  Maybe I'll buy another snow shovel from ACE as well.

McClendon's hardware replaced Ace for me for local fasteners.  Have. Bigger selection in metric stainless, chrome and now have black chrome in stock...  My first choice is bolt depot online but if I have immediate need I hit up McClendon's.

Thing I loved about Tucson was the number of small locally owned businesses that spanned a lot of variety. It was an odd place in many ways. It was strong local community and some people felt the 10-15 mile drive across town was unbelieveable while others wouldn't hesitate to do so. I was of the later group.  I grew to love the local flavor of the town and would like to live there again.
I come back here and while there are towns about 20 miles or far less apart they have nothing that compares to the range of choice available in Tucson.
Bolt & Fastener shops should have more business than they do I think in part because of the convenience of the Lowes or Home Depot or other stores like them.
I like to support good local owned businesses but sometimes the added price for that support just is too high. Becomes a question of what is that local business worth?  I try to avoid shopping at Home Depot because of some of their business practices in the same way I will attempt to avoid giving Walmart my business.

I have been on the receiving end of a company sending my job and my co-worker's jobs to another country and I hold a grudge in that regard and will avoid doing business with companies that will do business like this, or force suppliers to do this.

Sorry to range off-topic Ron.

That place is amazing.  A bit out of the way for me, but amazing nonetheless - and much better hours than Tacoma Screw.
Take care,

I lived in Tucson during my formative (and wilder) years. 1972 to 1976, Watching the sunset at Gates Pass. I worked at Valtronics (Drag Race shop), Tri-Onda (Honda Triumph shop). Lucky worked at our competitors on the other side of town.  Don't know his time frame though.

muy buenos recuerdos , IIRC.

"snowstorm" was a dud. Turned out to be 2 inches. Still bitter cold, record low tonight.

I've got a set of K2 carbs as they were taken off my bike in 1980. $200. Any interest? +S&H

Old hard manifolds $40 + S&H. Clamps in bad shape, may not have all of them.

Going on eBay Sat AM.

Shop time consisted of prepping some parts for delivery. Sold the carbs.

Waiting on the clocks.

Reset the luggage rack and rear turnsignals to better suit me. Consisted of various washers spaers and a furniture clamp. End result satisfying. They are all bolted to the fender mounts.  Should make the tire clearance problem go away. But a 140, possibly a 150 is the max width under a cb750 fender.  The nuts that are welded to the fender for mounting purposes are just so close. Any threads protruding from the nuts will likely cut up a tire. Be careful.

Hi Ron,
Is Phaedrus II ready for the 2014 season  :) ?!
During the bad weather we pulled a bunch of parts off for refinishing (chrome). Its taking  longer to get them back on than it did to take them off.

We also sent the clocks to Marcel in the Netherlands for refinishing. The outfit I had do them in CA did a halfass job. Just got them back.

But I have paid the entry fee for a VJMC show in late June. Hope to be running long before then.

Couldn't wait, unpacked them and they are beautiful! Better than new. And the tach was new, NOS in box.

He put his new repro covers on them, cleaned, lubed, and at my request, installed K0 faces in K1 bodies. Just thought I'd do something odd to see if any experts ever notice. The 8500 redline is a better match for the engine.   :D

He blackened the sides of the holes and cutouts (the other shop left them clear and it was noticable). And reset the jewels. The first shop did a hack job of placing them.

Patience from necessity, I suppose. Only have so many hours per week. And the rush to ride I had earlier in life is diminished for medical reasons. So we (me and build buddy Bruce and lately hangerson Ed) just spend our Sunday afternoons working on Phaedrus II.

Many others are looking forward to the riding season and got to get on their bikes, understandable. So they would have more concentrated lengthy days building and then riding.

Sure will. I had bot the faceplates from Lecram on eBay. Then gave them to another shop to install. Not being CB750 specialists, they left the edges of the holes and odometer cutouts the natural plate color which is essentialy a tan color. Should be black. Lecram (Marcel) did it right.

Today's Shop Time consisted of packing up the sold K2 carburetors. Also conditioned the intake manifolds for sale. They are in pretty good shape. 8 OEM clamps too, but a few of them have been clamped to the max.

Then we unpacked the instruments. They were received with an audible gasp by the gallery.

Marcel did me a solid. They look great!
He let me put the wiring and bottoms back on.

And of course the Bottoms from Browns:

One of several problems was that the edges of the light holes and odo cutouts were raw faceplate. Don't know what Marcel used , a black magic marker at least, but it makes all the difference. BEsides, he indicated the first shop did not replenish the lube, and the interiors were dusty and the jewels were not afixed in place.

While the tach was NOS, in order to make sure it matched the much used speedo, Marcel replaced both black covers with his new improved versions. Don't know what he did with the actual clear faces, but they matched also, clear and clean.

If any of you are considering rebuilding your clocks, you've got to consider Marcel. Sure its something that a good DIYer can do, it was a job I didn't want to do. CB750faces.com  His ads are often in the margin of this site.

NExt week we install the site glass and rebuild kit in the fr MC.

What type of product do you use to condition the rubber intake manifolds ? I've used silicone on used ones,I've also done the wintergreen treatment on hard used ones & been pleasantly surprised by the pliable outcome.

Thanks.

All of the usual suspects. Rubber Renew, or any black Chrome type product. Hasn't been a problem so far.
