Thanks everyone. Its been fun and its not over yet. To be truly finished, I need the chrome MC, a chain oil guard, a muffler mount/centerstand stop combo bracket, and some front fender refinish. But without that it still looks finished. But we're not going to stop till its all done.

No pics tonight but a couple of comments to pass on. When one's at an event like this, I've learned, you kinda sit back out of the way and listen to people talk as they pass by. One guy said those were the best looking wheels in the whole show. THAT made me feel good. Another said to me after he discovered it was mine, that it reminded him of a 20 something kid in CA with too much money in the 70s.  BINGO! that's just what I was going for, and we both laughed.

I started it several times, even after a day outside it always fired right up, warmed up quickly and took throttle willingly. No leaks, no smoke.  People commented on how quiet the Marshall was. Quieter than stock even, maybe, and there were many stock CB750s there. Something I was going after too.

There were 2 guys who admitted to knowing the Phaedrus reference, and 2 more that knew the "marching bear" Grateful Dead reference. Both of the 70s theme.

Boy am I goofy looking or what?

More pics coming, gotta get caught up from work first. Rally was really great, one of best I've ever been on/too. LOTS of great hardware. Three, count em, 3 Suzuki Wankels!  Several great CB750s, beautiful red and orange metal flake reproductions.

Maybe start a VJMC Rally thread.

You know Ed, whenever I have it running, I'm sitting on it and can't see the point cover.  I ask others to look but its either too much light and they don't know what to look for, or the HondaMan transistors reduce the arcing to the point it can't be seen. Gonna try it in the real dark this week.

Can't forget Build Buddy Bruce! He made it down on Saturday, day of show. Phaedrus would never have made it to completion without his relentless persistence. Six years of Sundays, I call it.

It was a People's Choice event. There was a 91 NightHawk that had been lowered, lengthened, huge rear tire, really nice paint job, chrome wheels, turbo with an open megaphone. Really fine custom knurled treatment to the fin edges. The guy actually rode it to the rally and all the rides. It was his baby. (I did hear him say a shop did all the work).  It got lots of attention and I was ready to concede it to him.  But when they announced "2nd place goes to the 91 NightHawk" Linda and I just smiled at each other.

I'll bet that 750 with the dustbin fairing is a handful, maybe even dangerous in a cross wind. ;)

I've got a few posts on the subject (VJMC Meet, etc.) before returning to build thread type entries.

I've got a sheet typed up with most of the mods and the suppliers. The problem with such a sheet is that its hard to give greater weight to one supplier over another. I'll take this chance to do so.

Mike Rieck (MRieck) (I think he still reads this thread) was instrumental in getting this project back on the tracks. I had all the top end parts done years ago by a machinist who came highly recommended (even Big Jay knew and approved of him) But the parts sat on the shelf for years, collecting surface rust on the sleeves, etc. Also, the machinist wasn't actually a CB750 guy, and was taking his cues from me. Things like guides, guide seals, materials, valves etc, he let me choose.  Then he died.

So by the time I got it nailed together, there were lots of potential weak spots. Sure enough, it leaked and rattled and smoked like an insect fogger.  I was sick.

After reading about Mike's exploits for years here, I decided to turn the whole top end over to him. He re sleeved it, bored and honed, reported the head, opening it up here and there more so than already, installed guides, seals, valves of his liking, 1.5mm oversize, cleaned and painted, and shipped it all back safe and sound. Then came my barrage of followup assembly questions which he fielded.

It passed the preliminary tests, starting in the shop, little smoke, no unexplained leaks, all cinched up in time. But in total, about 2.5 miles and 20 minutes run time.

So we load it up to go to VJMC in Spring Mill Park. Not much proving necessary, it just has to sit and look pretty.  Till some wiseacre wants to hear it run. I give him my excuses: hey this things not very impressive. The pipe makes it real quiet, and it hasn't been broken in yet. Still...

So I had to tell the people sitting on the park bench, 5 feet behind, they may want to move. I'm going to start it up and I don't know how loud or smoky it might be. They said go ahead.

It'd been over 24 hours since last started. Just the slightest amount of choke, touch the button and it fired right up. I pushed the choke open, held the idle up with the throttle, for 15 secs, and it settled down into a peaceful, quiet idle. A couple of blips on the throttle proved it was smoke free, and a few, more aggressive blips on the quick throttle provided the rush we all wanted and  I shut it off.

Mike guaranteed it wouldn't smoke. So he shouldn't be paying off this time.   :D

Congratulations on the award Ron! Thank you for the kind words too.
The work on Ron's engine was pretty straight forward. The real difference was Ron's ability to listen to my suggestions as well as finance all the work I felt was necessary. I was very confident he would get what he truly wanted....very satisfying for both of us at this point I'd say. ;) ;D
