Hi Ron

Glad to hear you had a great show and I believe you met Anders (he of the alternator upgrade) and he said a big hello from me. Still hoping to ride your bike this year  - if you are still up for it - September or October? Pick a weekend and lets make it happen ;)

All the best
Andy
Thanks for clearing that up! I'll msg him with thanks. Its been so cool, complete strangers come up and introduce themselves.

I really am up for it. I've been trying to lay out a 200-300 mile loop that would be representative of the routes I would take if I could.  Picture worthy, etc.

But I really want to be sure the brakes and engine and such are completely checked out with a few hundred hard break in miles before co-ordinating with you. Will be in touch.   :D

To Anders:
"Hi Anders288! I feel like I looked like a deer in the headlights when we met. I  was simply surprised and not expecting a long distance acquaintance. I follow all your posts on the website. I was hoping my 750 would be in long distance service, maybe needing an Anders alternator. That's probably not going to happen now.

I do have a virtually new OEM stator and the harness and such are all new, so its as good as a stocker can be. Hoping that I get a good breakin period soon. Then maybe Andy can take it on a real trip, what it was built for.

Thanks again for the contact, hope you had a good time in Indy!
Ron"

A bit late here, but Congrats on the VJMC award. Its great to see that your finally reaping the rewards of your labor, and enjoying the show circuit. The bike looks fantastic!

Gone through ZAMM not once, but twice now. Thanks for the inspiration to finally read it.

Thanks, still got a ways to go, in no hurry to finish. Just keep modding.

Pirsig said in the book that "Phaedrus" loosely translated to Wolf. Hence the wolf's head. But in the book about ZAMM that came out later, it was disclosed that Pirsig had made an error. Still, I liked the reference and kept it. Very occasionally, someone (usually a college professor or pseudo intellectual (like me)) knows the references and its good for some conversation.   :D

Just returned from Dreyers Motorsports Bike night. Dreyers Honda is the oldest Honda dealer in the USA. Featured tonight were some racers. One was Rick Dorfmeyer, an old friend of mine, who has 2 WLSRs at over 200mph. HE has lots of experience riding good and bad bikes of all sorts. I twisted his arm into being test plot for Phaedrus, he said he would!. I feel good about giving it to him. HE can recognize when something might be wrong and what it is.

He said he would calll me when he gets back from Bonneville. He's going to try to break his own records. I guess that salt really gets in your blood.   :D

Film tomorrow: Rick and "Project 212". Turbocharged CBR600, partial faired, open where the rider sits.

Sure thing Andy! Don't want t get too dramatic about all this, but then on the other hand, why not? Knowing that Rick will be helping, keeps us motivated to finish. We need to go over the bike closely in the next several weeks. Pull the oil pan and inspect. Dbl check all the frame torques, be sure its safe. I think Rick may actually have ridden this bike a few laps at then Indpls Raceway Park back in the late 70s when we were roadracing at the same time. Rick was much more successful than I, and continued on when I quit after a few years.  That's him in the middle. He's a sales manager for Tucker/Rocky. (and SOHC4.net Ed Phoenix on right)   :D

I asked him why he's going back to Bonneville after setting his records (gas and alcohol) last year. He reminded me that his (team's) goal was "Project 212", they meant to go 212mph, not just 200. Not sure the significance of 212, I'll have to ask him. And so we'll pursue Phaedrus's original goals: a dynorun at 90hp (I'd settle for 80+), some dragstrip time cards, and some real touring. The showing stuff was actually never part of the original goals, but its been fun. And we'll do more.

PS: I just looked it up. 212 is an even 30mph above the existing record. So that is the target.

Tangential activity this week, no photos:
Had to get the trailer lights sorted. They were doing the weirdest of things. Bottom line: as with 99% of all trailer light problems, it was bad ground. Once diagnosed,  we made positive ground on both lamps and everything works fine now.

Got a few projects that must be attended to, before more Phaedrus progress can be made. The Burgman 400 needs a clutch hub bearing. So we rearranged everything in the shop to bring it to the work area. Cleaned the work bench laid out the parts and reviewed the procedure. Should be a 4 hour job, we'll see. Then that bike can be sold to boost the treasury.

Gotta try and sell the CL77 I've been babysitting. Owner has shown no interest and I need the room.

Then Phaedrus will need a going thru, pull the pan to inspect the screen, check out everything for safety related issues. If it were just me I'd ride it as is. But asking someone else to ride it heightens the anxiety.

I'll respond here at least for now. It won some local shows when the owner was alive. It was a runner and appears complete. But with 5+ years of shop dust it needs some refinishing.  The black frame paint is flaking to show the original red frame paint. VIN #CL77-1029091     Parts that are often missing are there like the sidestand, centerstand, chainguard, bash plate, metal footpegs. I have a VJMC calendar with one on it and this has more original parts than that one. BEst I can tell its a 66 or 67.

I can answer specific questions as I don't know myself what specific things to look for.  But if I were to guess, I'd say some TLC puts it back in the show. It will need to be stripped to the frame for repainting, but I have looked and it appears to have all parts. The rear footpegs are a little floppy, so may have a springy bit missing.  H/Bars appear original (scrambler style, cross bar) and switch gear appears original.

An expert may know better.

Will be doing unrelated things for a while. Getting the Burgie ready to sell. NEeds a clutch hub bearing. I've been on the BurgieUSA site, very helpful like this one, as many have had this bearing go out. IT is not a critical part, bike runs fine, but it makes a god-awful nise. Unselable. We got the tupperware cracked and mostly off. Called it short. Hope to get the clutch cover off this week and finish.  Proceeds go to the treasury.  Tried to do this a few years ago, but the bearing noise sunk the deal. ITs been parked ever since.

Hope to really ride (or have ridden) Phaedrus in a few weeks. Need to determine if its roadworthy, unleaking, parts not falling off, etc. I suspect at least some oil leaking. But with just 15min on it, it seems the smoking is cured.  Look forward to that. Get a hundred miles on it, heat cycle, etc.

I googled it, and Central Indiana is full of Car/Bike shows in the adjacent towns, hope to hit some of those.

Ultimate goals are: Dyno run; drag strip run; a long day ride, maybe take Pimpzilla for a ride. I'll need help for all these but I'm looking forward to it. Help has been easy to get so far.   ;D

Thx Joe: I don't expect to ride it at all. Rick Dorfmeyer has offered to do some shakedown runs near my home early on a Sunday morning, as often as it takes to get it dialed in. Then take it to Dreyers for a Dyno Run.  Soon as he gets back from Bonneville. His facebook page says he's lined up for a run as we speak.  "Bonneville Project 212" if anyone's curious.

If he thinks its up to it, may get Rick to do some dragstrip work. All I want are some decent time slips, mid-elevens would be a lot to ask. Low 12s would prove it really works.

Andy750 has dibs on first roadtrip. I'd like him to do a 250-400 mile Saturday if he's up to it. Take it to some spots I would have taken it. And/or coordinate with a leg of Pimpzilla's World Tour.  Might could stand a companion for that, all depends on scheduling, and if the bike is up to it. And Andy too. While I'd like to send it out unaided, to be fair to Andy, I'd follow with the trailer.

Thanks for the offer Joe, you are "on the list" definitely, the more the merrier, AFAIC.  :D  Squeeze all the good times we can out of this POS!   ;)

Headway on the Burgman. A 1:4 schedule (What should take an hour takes 4). But I found a good DIY YouTube and an article specific to the problem. I'll link to another thread later. No real hangups, clutch almost off. Then replace the bearing and reassemble.

Can't wait till we get a lift. Life will be easier.

..............
Reading in your other thread, you said you needed some rest. What ails thee?

Few years back at school, when moving out of an apartment, I lifted a very heavy couch with very very bad form. That did some permanent damage to my lower back and has become a recurring nightmare since. So I've become used to watching it every time I lift anything since. Friday I was cleaning out my shop space and was moving some heavy stuff around to make more room, all the while very consciously guarding my lower back, but I got careless with the rest and ended up aggravating something else. Not quite as severe, but feels like a hernia. No more lifting things for a while, may also end up taking a few days depending on how tonight's shift goes...
