wow ron! just... wow!

as has been said just wait until it hits the sun.   8)
Thanks Ecosse. One more step concluded (almost) and that is..
The Brakes!

They work! I haven't quite got them bled to where i want them. But enough to see them swinging on the gate and retracting fully to let the wheel spin.

So in review, and for the sake of any newbies out there who will someday struggle with their own brakes...
There are only a few things that can be wrong when the caliper won't let go of the disc.. The highest probability is the return hole in the MC. many threads here covering that. And I'd rebuilt and cleaned mine to the point where that was eliminated. (BTW, love the VF500F MC. One from a Magna with the canted reservoir would actually be nicer and I'll look for one on eBay later.)

The hinge pin on the garden gate can be seized. But many are, and the brakes still work. They only need to retract 5thou to work. Mine had been disassembled, cleaned, fresh orings and grease. That wasn't it.

What i consider the lowest probability is the ORing in the caliper malfunctioning, and the groove it lives in. Since mine had been cleaned and new ORings fitted I just couldn't see that being the problem. But its not magic, something had to be wrong.

Turns out the ORings were the wrong size! I forget who i bot them from. But i just bot 4 new ones from Motogrid.com. They came in Honda sealed envelopes, chained together. It was only on a whim I held an old one up to a new one, and made the discovery. One was just close enough that it made one caliper seem to work. The other one was huge (picture in previous post) crammed into the groove, it made it ID even smaller and beyond flexing like it should.  I'm surprised I got it in the caliper and got the piston inserted in the first place.

Nevertheless with the new new Orings, all's well in phaedrus brake land and tomorrow will be a final systems check to starting the engine.

Fingers crossed!

As mentioned: brakes are sorted. I got the last bit of air out with this convoluted rig:

There is always some air trapped in the line that crosses over the fender from cal A to Cal B. So I have to remove Cal B and hold it up in the air. It was just moments to get the first burps. Twisitng the caliper around got the final bubs out and man its firm.

Next, the paint was done today. Bud told me it'd be the end of May and he was true to his word, even though i threw some monkey wrenches at him. Totally happy. The flames look on fire: (Note the "Phaedrus" in script)

The gold cap may not be a keeper. But with HondaMan's bolt and nut pivot pin, i can change that out over the winter.

Another for perspective:

Just like the picture i gave him. How do they do that? Sorry for the blur:

So much clear between layers you can almost see the shadow of the wolf on the flames below.  Painter told me he just finished today and to give it 3-4 days at 70deg before mounting.

About halfway thru the checklist for starting. We'll start it with the remote tank on Sunday, God willin" and the creek don't rise.

Thanks Hino, CBJ, and TT: Comedy of errors today. No starting, but oil is in and pumped around.

Nothing serious. Further update soon.

We worked on the tank and sidecovers a bit, couldn't help. had to open up the holes for the emblems. The original Orange doesn't look bad, goes good with the flames not so much the frame.

Joes emblem looks almost OK with the frame but a bit too yellow. He said we'll work on that.

Put the AutoZone Gold Door trim on the tank, looks pretty good. Less than $3. A hair dryer helps soften it up. I've had the clear on my van for over 10 years, never a hint of coming off. The tank edge is a bit thicker than a door edge so we'll see how good the adhesive is.

I don't know about that glare below the wolf's mouth, but its not there in person thank goodness.

We struggled for some time to get the cap on. The holes were nearly painted shut. I hand drilled them out with my machinists index, don't get to use it very often. Then we muscled on the Joker thumblatch. For some reason the lid won't close far enough for the thumblatch to hook on the bar underneath the cap. So I'll be calling Joker in the AM for a remedy.

I pulled the plugs preparing for kicking it over. This plug wrench of unknown origin is good, with the 12mm hex on the end.

Checked the oil lines, passageway caps, all i could think of before adding oil. Went to pour in some oil and instantly went to the floor. Left the drain plug out! Caught it quick with my thumb and luckily Bruce wasthere to get the drain plug while I plugged the dike or there'd be 1/2 quart on the floor. Got the rest in. Kicked it through till I was tired. Good feeling, just the right amount of friction, no tapping. Went to hit the starter, to spin it with more vigor, blew a fuse. Well that popped the balloon for today.

Went looking for more. While snooping at the fuse holder, I realized the line from the trans to the oil tank was missing. Went looking for that. Ended up buying some at AutoZone though i may get some clear at ACE. Need the Cam cover breather too. Found the original but it's as hard as a stick. May go for some clear there as well.

While snooping at the trans to tank breather I realized something looked funny. Like the brake light switch wires... one was plugged into a blue wire. As i told Bruce that shouldn't matter, blue is almost like black, isn't it?

Got that mixup corrected and hopeful that was the cause of the blown fuse. Don't know when or how, as we got power to everything last week. But somewhere in my dreams i guess i walked out there and switched the wires.

More soon.

Went to "Steel Ponies" today at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indy. Refreshing change of pace. Really old bikes nicely done, skippped a few generations, Evel's bike, Capn America replica, then godawful modern choppers with the SW flair. All old Indians or HDand the chops were all HD platforms. Brutal practicality and style to rediculous impracticality. Still a good, though small show.

No.  :(  But we made some progress, did things that needed to be done. Splainin tomorrow. Spun it over and pumped some oil so elecric starter works. Just ran out of time. Final details during the week, and nothing to stop a start next week.

Had to install the tins to make sure it all fits.

After finally seein' the whole package put together, i can say that I like it!  I agree about the gas cap though... chrome / polished would flow much better with the overall feel.

Actually the exhaust is firm, though it needs a different bracket ultimately that fits a little better. What you're seeing is a bungie to hold up the centerstand. That's one of the delays. Fixing that required removing the muffler/collector which isn't real easy on this pipe as its 4 separate headers running into the collector. Though we're geting pretty good at it.

Almost wish I'd popped for a Kerker. But the Marshall has more... panache?  Anyway it can always be changed later.

Thanks CBJ! After getting it to latch, we kinda like the gold one. But a chrome one is on the way, so with the screw and nut affair for the hinges, from HondaMan, they are easy to swap out.

It would probably photograph better without the backrest.

I think for me it would be the combo of the Polished Oil fill cap on the cover sync'ing with the tank also having a Polished Cap.  Gonna have to get a pic of that thing in full sunlight  8)

I gotta admit, I was a bit worried about the final look.  But it actually looks quite good.  From a distance, the tank and side covers almost look chrome.  Looking forward to the ride report.
