Thanks for looking!

Those are true 3 pointers, something that had been on my wishlist for this bike. The brand has been lost to eternity. I found them on eBay. They were in very bad shape finish wise. I had the choice of rechroming at Brown's for $75 each, or powdercoat with the frame for $15 each, so the powder won out, but i think it makes them look more like they belong there.

I had the rt front triangle motor mount welded to the case guard mount, again for a more integral look, and strength which is bragging rights, not really necessary.

Thanks!

Well mine will underwhelm you. The Marshall DeepTone is the closest thing to a street legal 4-1 you'll hear. It is certified for use in Europe where they have stricter noise requirements for aftermarket pipes.

Nevertheless, we got it started again today, off the umbilical tank. even so, it always helps to turn the gas on.   ;D  And at least up to 4K rpm, it sounds, well, deeptone, and I'm happy with it.    ;D   ;D

No vid yet. I wanted to have the tank mounted first. Still no way to set the petcock that won't interfere with the Henry Abe valve covers which i want to use. Option is to just use a stock cap in the #1 intake position, or have the HA cap cut down.

Photobucket's running slow tonight so no pictures.

I'd started a thread about cutting down the internal wire of a tach cable. The MotionPro cable I had made is too short (the internal wire) to drive the tach. I fond a longer internal wire in spare parts, and cut it down with the cutoff wheel of a dremel. Works fine. So I knew how much we were revving this time.

Pulled the #1 and 4 plugs to get a prelim compression check, just for grins. Pumping 210PSI, very healthy. Probably would've pumped higher if I'd pulled 2 & 3 also as the starter would spin it faster.

Now I don't know for a fact how important this is. A shop i worked at decades ago did a lot of dragracing and he was really keen on "volumetric efficiency" and "kicking pressure". I'm open for any discussion.

But in the context of what i grew up with kicking pressure north or 210 is desirable for a built motor. Given stock is more like 160-180psi. Harder with a hot cam, mine is the puny WebCam 41. With 10.5-1 CR pistons.

Boy, it starts easy and takes throttle without hesitation.

More tomorrow when photobucket recovers.

Over.

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
Congratulations Ron, being that the longest build thread in the history of this forum is finally coming to a close, it's starting to feel a bit like the last episodes of M.A.S.H, so it's with mixed emotions that I finally see your bike's rebirth nearing completion.

Once it's up and running, and this thread is cast to the archives of history, I hope your bike pops up in the "What did you do to your bike today?" thread, on a regular basis. "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen". Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Longest for sure, but we've covered a lot of topics. You (well maybe not "you"   :D  ) can pick almost any page at random and either learn something or be entertained.

Probably, as I'm skipping some things now to get it going. So they will be covered later.

What I really hope to post in is the "SOHC on the Road" thread.   ;D

Thanks Andy!  I've been to Pittsfield on my FJR, man that was a ride. Its as far to Pittsfield from here as it is to Denver.  Maybe i can get to Boston on Phaedrus. i had embarked to Pittsfield to see a friend and was going to take the long way home thru Maine and Canada, but got rained, no flooded out. In six days of hard riding i had hard rain for 5 and cold wind on the 6th. So i was robbed of my trip to the NorthWoods.

Here's the pics to go with my update:
Cutting down the tach cable;

I found a tip o YouTube (for cutting down a clutch cable) to hold the cable with some pliars (there are actually cable cutting pliars to do this) and take the cutting wheel right up against the edge of the pliers. This makes for a very smooth cut of the braid.

Since that end of the cable is smashed into a square, the slipjaw pliers held it very well. I tried to place a drop of solder on the tip then clean it off. But my method for truing the solder would pick up the braid and start to unravel it. So i went without the solder. Tach now works great. Motion Pro was perfectly willing to work with me on getting it straightened out. But I didn't want to wait. I can work with them come winter time.

Vanity plate with homage to the Grateful Dead;

The painter Bud Henley told me to get some undercoating (he ended up giving me some) and paint it on the filler neck where his paint ended and the sealer/primer started to bond down the edge from being lifted by fuel fumes. Probably not needed but he said do it so I did. Applied with a small brush:

Replaced the gold cap with a new OEM chrome one. Much better.

PSI = 200+. It was reading about 215 but bled down a bit by the time i got the camera.

Decided to polish a stock tappet cover rather than cut down one of an otherwise complete set of Henry Abe covers. Got my eye on a set from Joker, but they're not period. I'm curious why HA would make these if they don't clear the petcock. Maybe they cleared on the rt side cocks, but mines a later left side?

With that decided we can get the tank mounted, and maybe take it for a ride next weekend.

The stand keeps it at a dangerously vertical angle. Guess i didn't compensate enough for the lower profile tire. Got a plan there, but don't really want to ride it if that's not resolved. Out to the shop to try something.

Damn you Ron, damn you  ;)  Congratulations, you beat me  ;D  I installed a new AGM battery about 4 weeks ago without the plugs and it spins great BUT... tried multiple times and it didn't bring up any oil pressure so I chickened out and walked away for the time being. Working more now so not as much time to play. Gonna install the new Joker gauge and gas her up, install the plugs and see what happens. Keep my fingers crossed and hope the assemblly lube holds out. Were you getting any pressure before you gassed it and hit the starter? How long did it take the first time?
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Yeah I had you in mind breathing down my neck. "Gotta beat Jerry!".

No, I spun it with the starter and no plugs too, and i had primed the pump in a pan of oil. No pressure, light was on and gauge didn't budge.

It wasn't till i lit her up for real. The oil light went out faster than immediately. The gauge hesitated for a second, but on the first blip off idle it went to 70PSI.  Yours will too.  ;D

I've started it 20+ times. It lights up just thinking about hitting the starter. Held it at 2 to 4000 to get the case paint heated up. Sounds like a Husky sewing machine. (that's good BTW)

I had a 70s era gauge with the copper elbow and ill fitting gauge. The Joker gauge is just too neat. Either the old style or the new. After seeing the new, i see what he was going for, an OEM style look, but i like the old style better. Either are really made for the bike not just an add on.

I'm not too keen on their politics or lifestyle, though i leaned that way in the 70s. I just really enjoyed their sense of life music. Still do.

They were benign, peaceful. A little longing for those days can't hurt.

i'm with ya. i grew up in an east coast college town in the 70's so let it be known i'm resisting my political soap box with all my might  ;D. i think to your point: i'm also all for the live and let live (don't tread on me ;)) attitude and that era had some of the best (and worst ::)) music, cars, motorcycles, miniskirts, etc). longing for a less regulated, free spirited, cynical time is part of why i like these bikes.

my comment was largely tongue-in-cheek.
