I have reynaulds syndrome and it really bites.  When I work in the shop during the winter my fingers look like they are dead, with out any circulation, and hurt like a #$%*.  This also make winter riding with out heated gloves nearly impossible.

Luckily the climate here is pretty mild and my shop is insulated with finished walls so it stay pretty warm.
Wow, TinTop and Tweakin and other sufferers. Looks like I hit a nerve! (excuse the pun) Misery loves company.  :(

From what I've read, about 10% of the pop has Reynaulds, most goes undiagnosed and is simply tolerated. Not much we can do anyway. I'd been given some creams and oral gabapentin (the creams usually contain gabapentin also). But its so inconvenient and I hate oral cause it eventually messes with your kidneys.

My toes are like your fingers. They turn purple and hurt like heck, in conditions others would tolerate well.  My rheumatologist says I don't have Reynaulds, but polyneuropathy, which evidently shares symptoms. I failed the neuropathy tests so I guess that's right. addtl symptoms include a "foot drop" which makes me trip on things, edges of carpets, stairsteps etc. The numbness in my toes comes and goes and is no longer related to cold, but happens at all temps. hence the neuropathy.  Exercise and PT is all, only gets worse.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to my new heating system. At worse, its only as an experiment, I can relate the results to everyone else. At best, it'll make shop time more comfortable and productive.  ;D

Got a good start on "shop time", but had to waylay for the end of the Colts game. Last play last 4 seconds, Colts win! Pretty cool.

So we decided to attack the install of the HondaMan dual headlight relay. Lots of wires, HM provided extra jumpers for just in case. Turns out we needed them. But it was all color coordinated to Honda colors and amazingly fit in my shell which is smaller than OEM. Once installed, when you hit the on switch you can hear the relays click. Holy C3PO. Quite a headlight.

Wrapped up that install, got started on the transistorized ignition, though no connection headway. Disconnected and rerouted the harness for the horns. Trying to clean it up. Now its either dead, or they blare when you turn the key on. Yikes! I musta disturbed something in the HLite shell. We'll sort that out later.

Will post this in Classified for sale. But here's a teaser. I've got 15 ft of clear 5.5mm fuel line from a snowmachine store up north. Yours for $2 per foot plus USPS. Probably 90ยข or $1.10, or so.

Horn problem was a simple unplugged wire, intermittedly shorting to frame.

All of the fuelline is sold.

Figured it would be something simple like that.  Especially after you had been inside the head light.

Having removed the beam to search for the problem, discovered nothing wrong. Went where I should have gone to begin with, the horn power under the coils. That's where the disconnect was. We had soldered new connectors to the relay harness and I guess I didn't get it pushed back in firm enough and it slipped out.

Had some holiday obligations overriding the shop time. Sat, we met the couple that introduced my wife and I 29 years ago. They are now from Evansville, we Indy, so we met halfway at the Brown County Inn for a long overdue visit.
Sunday we went to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse. For those of you who know them it was an awesome show. For those who don't punch them up on YouTube. Gotta hear/see "Wizards of Winter". Better yet, here it is: (sans laser lights show and pyrotechnics)
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Wizards in Winter

I did manage to spend some money. After hours of study and shopping I bought 2 3000w Infrared Tube heaters to hang from the ceiling. Replace the single 5000w fan forced heater. A varitemp controller for each. IR heat is supposed to jump from the heater to the "objects" 2 of which will be my feet. They work even in the absence of air. So supposedly more efficient, certainly more expensive. But we've all seen Hospital overhangs and such that have IR heaters above and melted snow on the pavement, with no regard for the cold air in between. Well we'll see how well they work for me.

Besides that I got my polished parts back from 73nancy. Nicely done. Now I can sell the 9 bolt clutch cover I have in favor of the proper 10 bolt unit. Takers?

The pics here are better. Scroll towards the end.
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=112673.msg1303536#msg1303536

The caps are especially nice. I've tried to polish those myself, dismall failure. Now these by 73nancy are a tick away from the chrome ones I have to compare with. And the polish has a better "look" than chrome I think.

Very nice work by 73nancy MCR, more bling for the Super Standard.  I have x4 of the fin'd HA rocker covers sitting on a motor.  Would need the 'treatment', but your welcome to them if you want a set.

With the Hex Socket drive and the radial fins? I had a set too, but they interfered on the intake side with the gas tank AND the petcock.

For that matter the vertically finned ones in my pic interfere as well. I traded my HA caps to Terry for some chromed OEM ones. Which are on the bike now and I like them.  I might use them on the intake side and the vertical fins on the exhaust.

Anyway, thanks but i have all the caps i need for now.   :D

Hey Ron, how much do you want for your 9 hole clutch cover? SteveK0 was looking for one for a sandcast engine he'd just bought last time I was out at his place? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Got a good shop day in. The heaters came, earlier than expected. Hope to get those mounted this week. We reassembled the headlight turnsignal bucket, hopefully for the last time. Horns work delightlfully. They seem really loud, but the test is out in the open later. But they are what they are and are really cute.

The really nice headlight clamps have recessed allen screws in the clamps. These are impossible to get to when the bucket is in place. I swapped them out for chrome hex head bolts. Since the horns are attached to them, this is a better deal than the allens.

The HLight works with HMs relay pack. All fits in the bucket.

Next we swapped out the newly polished proper 10 screw clutch cover for the 9 screw (sandcast) cover that found its way into this project many years ago. It's now destined for the home of the highest bidding Sandcast aficianado. In the sandcast only site there was a post in 2010 indicating a value fo $200 to $300. Yamiya had a used "reconditioned" one for sale for $725, but it's gone now. Could they have sold it for that?

Add to the list of way crazy priced (mostly sandcast) parts like the unicorn triple and the recessed ignition.

No pics this week.

We move on hanging the Infrared Heaters. (IR) This may be a big bust, but we got to try. The fan forced air heat used so far just isn't keeping these old bones warm enough to spend time in the shop. Coincidentally, i was in Home Depot checkout lane, buying a replacement snowthrower (my other one was stolen), and I feel this wave of heat thru my body. No air moving, no warm draft, what gives. I look up and there about 25ft away on the ceiling is a IR heater.

The ones we bot are like 4 ft fluorescent fixtures but with 1 tube. Fostoria brand.

Took a while hemming and hawing, which way to hang them, moving stuff around to get high enough to set the hooks, etc. But they're up now.

Now to get the electrician in to wire them up. 3000w each. Fingers crossed.

Well that's always a good joke.  But in reality, I'm running a 5000w fan forced heater now, and a 1500w on the side. The new heaters are 3000w each x 2. (The 1500w is still an option asit runs on a different breaker.) But they have vari-heat controllers which can moderate the draw, whereas the 5000w is either on or off, runs on a thermostat.

I saw the math one time which said my old setup would cost about $10 per day to run. I'm in the shop 4 to 5 days per month so lets say $50, and that's about what i see on the bill, and I can live with that, cost of my hobby. I don't see any reasoon why the IRs would cost any more to run. In fact if what they say bout them is true they should be less to run. Even at that it will take some years to amortize the cost savings. So, the real reasoon is not cost but comfort, noise, tunability.

I see no way in the world one could ever amortize the un-subsidized cost of solar panels in Indiana. <50% days of sunshine in the winter.

That was one of my concerns with my shop all along. A 5000w + a 1500w with the good insulation I have should be enough for my sf and 8ft ceilings. Problem is, my ceiling is 9ft at one wall rising to 14ft on the other. So I'm heating the upper space. I've been up there on a ladder before, hanging stuff, and it is toasty. Then come back down to the floor and its..not toasty.

So the IRs are supposed to heat objects, not air. In fact they will work in a vacuum! which i hadn't considered, but so says Wickipedia. They will heat the workbench, tools, the bike, the FLOOR, and most importantly ME. That's what i felt at Home Depot at the checkout lane. I didn't feel any sort of blast of warm air coming at me, just my body got warmer.

The air only gets warmer as a side effect of warming the objects, then they in turn heat the air.

So there should be little loss of the energy going into the heaters from hot air risiing. Which should/could mean they are more energy efficient. The trade off is the fan forced heater was $250. I've got nearly $1000 in the IRs.

But if they heat me and the rest as advertised, are quiet, and fully adjustable as to laying out the heat, they will be worth it.

The fan forced runs off a conventional thermostat. So it heats the air up to a point then shuts off. Then the temp drifts down to the prescribed level at which point the fan kicks in again. This spread being almost too warm on the high end and almost too cold on the low end. And it always kicks back in just when the Colts are kicking a field goal. The IR controllers are set by me at a steady temp and they stay there quietly emitting radiation.

We'll see, could all be a bust, but live and learn.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ron....You DESERVE a bike lift brother. You don't know how much life is improved with such a device. ;)
I've been resisting it as it takes up so much floor space. But, it may become a higher priority as my back falters. I can build a larger storage shed to store dormant project pieces.

The electrician is scheduled for Wednesday, for the heaters and a security light outside.

We approached one of if not the last farkle I wanted to put on Phaedrus, the HondaMan transistor ignition booster. It is a very cool product. All the wiring is colorcoded and what i need. Don't confuse me. I'd heard that it could go under the battery box. But try as we might I couldn't see how. So we got to looking at the underside of the seat. Even with a scaled down tool kit (Chain adjust kit only) it was just barely too thick. The seat would close but there was no clearance, the ignition box was pinched in place, and I couldn't go for that.

So then we got the bright idea to just do away with the toolkit altogether. I never needed it except for adjusting the chain. And with an ORing that will become unnecessary except for longer trips where I'd have a travel bag anyway. So that's what we settled on.

So we farted around, opined the Colts loss and called it a day.

I went in and sat down with a brew and the HondaMans book. Hey look there an appendix on the ignition system. Besides mentioning the tool tray, there was a diagram on how to make a bracket to mount it under the battery! Too simple. Have to pull the battery which I wanted to avoid. (lots of wires) But it must be done, as under the bat is where it belongs.

Once that's done I'll have no more excuses. I'll have to address the oil leaks and the smoking. Spring time is coming.
