Weather update: Starting at 25, within 3 hours shop a balmy 65.   :D

REceived the SUDCO Mikuni Manual from Z1 Enterprises. Only has about 4 pages of 30+ pages on the VM29s. But they answered my questions, for now. The carbs come set up for CB750, GS750 (2 valve), and several larger Kaw models. Each one is listed with a baseline group of jets. I remembered 32 years ago I changed the main jets, and appears my memory was correct. 115s were baseline, mine have 112.5s in them and a set of 115s is in my carb box. So my memory is holding up. The idea that my smoke may be from too rich not likely the case then. And since my CB750 is actually a CB888 the whole range is likely a tad lean. Moving on.

My original oil light sender was puking oil out the black plastic area. I know many here have mentioned an auto unit would work for less money. A quick trip to AutoZzone yielded little. Well, they had them, but they had a spade or bullet connection rather than the OEM screw. I didn't want to modify the wiring.

I'd already placed my order to MotoGrid, so off to eBay. (cont soon) Everet Powersports had OEM senders BIN at $30+ but free shipping. Gottta have OEM so I went for it. Now installed.

Next to the Alt cover and shifter cover gasket. I tried an old trick I've told people about. But its been so long since I've done it, wanted to confirm. If you shim under the foot pedal of the centerstand, the bike will tilt to the right, oil drains to the cases, and removal of the covers is nearly oilless. So now confirmed. The alt cover came off oilless after only a few minutes and shifter cover just tiny drips.

Pics toorrow.

You've got me convinced on going radiant heat.  However, because of the cost of electricity here (thanks to a goverment bungled green energy program >:(), I'm going to use natural gas.

Choice is either x2 of these (25K btu)-

Either would be a good thing. The dif I note would be, gas uses a thermostat which is on/off as opposed to the temptroller which actually throttle the electric ones down without actually turning them off.

That point leads me to the 2 unit choice, each with its own thermostat. You can shut one off if its not needed.

Still, I would have gone gas too except the cost of running it to my shop from my basement was too much. So there you go.

I think you said you have Reynauld's? The radiant puts the heat right in the floor and your feet. I have a neuropathy in my feet and I can really enjoy the comfort. The price will sting for a while. But its like chrome or performance parts. The sting last for a while. The grins last much longer.   :D

I'm curious as to how the gas fired ones work. There is no fan visible, so they may be silent like the electric ones. Maybe the gas flowing will make a slight noise.

Here's the newer OEM on the left v the original OEM sender on the right. The newer one has a true 24mm hex v the round sender with the flutes. It also has a near chrome finish v the old patina. OF course that's near worthless as its covered with a rubber boot. But I'll know.

Here's what I mean by shimming up the centerstand. I used a piece of laminate flooring and a 1 x 2.

The oil in the pan is mostly from earlier. Other than that there was little to no oil ot of the covers.

Later!  :D

Good stuff Ron, coincidentally, I had to remove the covers off a K2 that I had to totally re-rewire over the last couple of weekends. A PO had rewired the bike using odd bits of wire with no OEM connectors, most were horrible auto parts connectors, or worse, wires just twitched together and slathered in insulation tape, and not surprisingly, it didn't work real well.

I thought about tilting the bike to the right like you did, but I was worried that it'd tip over and land on my Triumph Rocket III, so I just put a pan under it, and only about half a cup of oil came out. Tom (the owner) had given me a litre of oil to top it up after he'd rebuilt the oil pump (with your help, a few pages ago) so it wasn't a biggie.

It looks like you're getting closer to firing it up and checking the smoke issue mate, that's good. When Tom brought the K2 over, the breather hose from the oil tank was missing, and Tom had assumed that the breather from the rocker cover connected to that fitting. I fired the bike up, and with the engine running, when I removed the oil tank cap, there was a "woosh" noise, and I realised that the engine was pressurising the oil tank. I'm not sure what effect that would have had, but it was interesting. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

My wiring is virtually all new or barely used. HEnce my aversion to cutting anything up even if the sender could be had cheaper.

Tilting: I had a helper and even so we tilted it a little too far to the rt and we both emtted an audible gasp. That would be a disaster. But just right is good. Its not a lot of oil to avoid for sure, but just a trick if so inclined

Pretty sure all my hoses and such are properly routed. But before starting it will get a once over.

Got the cam chain tensioner reinstalled along with the dyno and shifter cover.

Next details: swap out the thumblatch on the gas tank for a Joker one, and measure out a shorter centerstand.

At first I was a little bummed that I had lowered the bike as much as I had. But as time has moved on, seems that my neuropathy is now coupled with a "severely narrowed disc" in the lower lumbar, resulting in a loss of mobility and leg strength. The lower seat height is now welcomed.

Optimism springs eternal: new plate purchased for 2013:

Proof we did something: covers are off: (and back on with new gaskets)

Bucket list purchase: extraloong allens:

The shorty allen was always scratching areas exp here:

The long ones clear it nicely. Bruce sanded out the scratches and all that's needed is some buffing.

Nice work Ron, I've never owned a set of those socket style allens, but I saw some at a tool shop and thought they might be handy, once I buy a bigget tool box, ha ha! Hey what's up with Bruce's thumb? Is he double jointed or something? I tried to do that with my thumb and I can't make that top knuckle stick out like that? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Just one of those odd camera angles. Not really that bad in real life. My thumb, BTW.

Yeah he keeps coming up with great stuff. But I like the paint job on the plain covers I did buy from him.

60° outside means 70+ inside. Had to throttle way back on the heaters to stay in the shop.

I'm slowly but surely running out of things to do. We replaced the black thumblatch on the gas cap with a chrome one also from Joker. The Gold cap, black latch idea just wasn't good, and we decided to go all chrome. The paint was too thick on the latch bracket to allow it to move freely. Rather than disturb the bonding of the paint we went after the latch with file and Dremel. The chrome was so thick and soft, I think we got the re-sizing done without too much damage to the latch. (We had to re-size the black one too, before this. But it was anodize rather than chrome.)

The owner at Joker said he never had one that didn't fit before, which I believe as his stuff is the best. He said if I couldn't re-size it to my satisfaction he would send me a new one. First, its not his fault that I have a thick custom paint job, and second I don't know what sending another one FOC would accomplish except a second try at it I supppose. Nevertheless he was willing to help, whatever it took, and that was commendable. We made both of them work. The chrome works so well, latches and moves freely, we surprised ourselves, though it took a couple of hours.

So, with the tank finished and back on, we started it up. Hasn't been started since we put the HondaMan transistors in. Worked fine. But, sad to say, it still smoked.   :(  With the front end hopefully working, I'll put some miles on it in case something needs to set in. But I don't think so. I'll share my speculations as to whats wrong later. It's just an engine, it can be fixed.

In the meantime, we admired it.

You can see the minihorns each side under the headlights. Fitted with relays, they are pretty loud. Once I got over the idea that they aren't yachtlike in tone, my first desire, I really like the bikelike sound and their location tucked away. That leaves the OEM horn bracket available for the oil cooler.

Anther bit of shopping done was for the instruments. I have a like gold NOS OEM K1 tachometer. Fresh from the box. The speedo is from a K1 also, but very used, guts work though. So, to really mess with the aficionados, I bot K0 faces from Lecram (eBay). The tach face is redlined at 8500 rather than 8k, more fitting for my motor. So I'll have those put in. Then on the speedo side, I'll have the guts re-calibrated to the 18" wheel and a new K1 body, also from Lecram. Just waiting on the bodies, crimp rings, from Lecram. Foreignspeedoinc.com will do the work.

I can use dummy instruments while those are gone, to run the bike if need be. A centerstand is at K&J Performance to cut it down so I don't have to wrestle with the lowered bike. But this won't keep me from riding either as the sidestand now fits perfectly.

The last (I think) thing on the list is the oil cooler, but that won't keep it off the road either.

If the smoking is a head problem, it will be in Mike's hands for a fix. I don't really think it's rings/cyls. But anything's possible.

This is an interesting build that has resulted in a very interesting bike!

Thanks. Its going on 5 years now. One partial day a week, plus a lot of internet time. But we've barely ever missed a week.

I've put a lot of miles on this bike over the years. This is its most extreme makeover. I may not get to ride it again like I thought years ago, though, due to advancing health problems. Shouldn't keep me out of the shop though.

I see you're rather new, welcome. We've touched on just about everything there is to talk abut re: CB750. It seems anyway. Certainly a lot of pretty obscure stuff.

So if you're ever bored you know where to go!    ;)

Poking around on this thread has motivated me to read Pirsig's book again. I think I am enjoying it more than the first time I read it 125 years ago. One thing is certain... I will finish rereading the book faster than I get through reading this thread.

Well we sucked it up and pulled off the top end. (Thanks APE frame kit) Seems there are some suspicious looking marks on the intake valves and piston tops.

Terry said he didn't think it sounded right, ticky tick noise.

Can we say, embarrassed?   :-[

Thanks guys. Mostly embarrassed. My assumption:
I thought by choosing the first step away from a stock cam (WEBCAm 41) I wouldn't need to check clearances.

The POWROLL pistons from before never had clearance problems, with an even more radical cam. But on closer inspection, the ARIAS fly cuts are actually smaller than the POWROL were.

if its possible that this could cause my smoking, I'll be happy. It'll hurt but whatever is needed including a new head, valves, cyls, etc. I'm ready to provide.  Could be nature's way of telling me to upgrade!   And learn something.
