This place has good sleeving Ron  http://vintageconnections.com/

They're an excellent source of Honda electrical connectors as well; I have one of the crimpers Vintage Connections offers, and it's the business.
I've bot a box of doodads from them, I'll have to look into the crimpers.

AS to the sheathing, certainly high gloss, it doesn't appear to be heat shrink. (The OEM stuff looks heat shrinked) So it would be tough to tuck the end into the grommet on the base of the clock. That would look like a nerd wearing flood pants with multi colored socks, if you get my drift. Since i may not get to ride this much, I'm getting more anal about these things.   :D

BTW: a little backstory: Tony Kanaan wins Indy 500. Drives for KV Racing (Different K) Friend of mine is the crew chief, and modified my fender and fork brace and attempted to mod the sidestand.

KV Racing is about 200 yards from my back door.

Just something to talk about. Oughta be good for 10mph on the top end, don't you think?

I've been invited but never gone in. I ought to.

He always came here to pick up the parts.

Changing subjects... there is a box, THE BOX, on my shop floor. I've been distracted with other things, now I'll go open it.

Film at 11.

Christmas in June:
Mike is pretty proud of his packaging skills. I'd have to agree! Here it is on a pedestal:

Arrived in perfect shape. Here's the first layer:

Next layer:

The tell: JMR Porting. The inscription below JMR is RES (Racing Engine Service) the first machinist. Ron Scrimsa, well known, well respected, but has since passed away. I'm sure if I had installed the parts timely after receiving them, and the engine smoked he would have made it right. He put in the suspect K0 guides at my request. Mike put more time into the ports, opened up for 1.5mm OS valves, and deshrouded the combustion chambers. While I have no first hand knowledge about porting, I know Branch Flowmetrics deshrouded them, and the bike in my avatar had near hemi chambers also. Ran great. More to my liking. Mike also installed guides with seals.

Love those big honkin intake valves!
Next came the cylinders:

I'll leave it in the bag till I'm sure ready for it. The first cyls sat on a shelf for so long, they got rusty. I then honed the rust out. While I thought I just barely skimmed it, I may have ruined the bores dimensionally causing or contributing to the smoke. I won't let that happen again.

My name has been inscribed on both parts along with some modification details, nice touch.

So, I've got to clear off some personal obligations but hope to get to the assembly process soon.

Thanks Mike!   ;D   ;D

Looks great Ron. I was very surprised at how well Mike ships his parts. Great idea using that solid foam insulation. I will be using that trick in the future.

Thanks, that reminded me I don't have any shots of the ports. I'll get those later in the week, when shop day rolls around again.

Compared to a stock head I have on the shelf.

Stupid question.  What is the size of the stock valves?  My head is getting 5mm valves from Mike.

"Stupid question.  What is the size of the stock valves?  My head is getting 5mm valves from Mike."

The 5mm you refer to is the size of the stem. It is smaller than stock to give more room in the port for flow, as I understand it.

My 1.5MM oversize is the size of the opening in the chamber, reflected by the head of the valve, not the stem. Stock is 32mm. OS is 33.5mm. I think that's it.

I did not go with the 5mm stems.

Check with Mike. The 5mm valves may be automatically oversized heads as well.

That 2" owens corning foam will provide good crush resistance and support for the box and its contents. Model airplane guys will cut foam wings from the blue Dow 2" foam and laminate it to make fuselage plugs for fiberglass one-off scratchbuilt models. The pink OC foam is a little denser(heavier) than the blue Dow foam.
well packed, quality work packaged to arrive safely intact!

No update last week. I spent my shop time in a basement replacing a sump pump. But we did receive Mike's box of goodies as already posted. So the task is to get enough workbench space available to start work on the engine. First thing was to finish up the pigtails on the instruments. I ordered a new back for the speedo as the one we had was deeply scratched. But the new ones from Honda are multipurpose, with a large cutout to accommodate several K series. Just didn't look right. In anticipation of not liking that back I sent the OEM one to Brown's hoping they can overcome the deep scratch.

After practicing on an old instrument we put the Heat shrink sheathing I'd found on eBay on the pigtail. Mt fear was that at 1/2in it wouldn't shrink far enough to sheath 5 wires. Turns out no prob.
Practice:

Tip: use a heat gun on high for about 20 seconds.

Nice fit with the grommet.
AS reported the NOS OEM tach sheathing was hard as rock. IT was pulling out of the grommet and had the appearance of near breaking. I bit my lip and we replaced the sheathing on it as well. Settled well insode the cover, not to pull out. Nice and flexible, no chance of cracking.

Mike was concerned that the sleeves he used would it in my cases. So we confirmed all is OK there.

Had a low level crisis. Got a knock pin cocked in the hole, who among us hasn't. Nearly destroyed it getting it out. Dressed the hole with a tube of emery paper, slipped the next one in no problem.
Just a review for those who may wonder why we port the CB750 head. Here's one example. You can see a bump in the port of this stock head. The light is reflected back. Its as though someone put a thumb print in the aluminum when it was soft. Very disturbing to efficient flow.

Grind it out, smooth and taper. IF you stick your finger in a stock intake port you'll find many such anomalies that are removed by porting. There is only so much a manufacturer can do before the bean counters say move on. Porting is done nearly completely by hand, which the manufacturer just can't afford to do.

Final consideration for the evening. The 4 cam bearing hold down stud came to me in a bag. Me and these have real bad karma. This engine (different head now) leaked out of these stud holes to an obscene amount. Many here have had the same problem. Replacing these studs in a way to prevent leakage eluded me, as I had stripped the holes, helicoiled them (big no-no) stripped those, replaced with 1/4-28s, and well, gave up.

These holes are nice and fresh and Mike says use a Teflon paste thread sealer and no leaks should occur. I'm confident this is so. Here's the stud and you can see where its threaded hole actually goes thru the head and opens to the atmosphere in the plug cavity.

Next week we hope to get the rings on the pistons, pistons on the rods and maybe the cyls on. I only have so much time each week to work on it, but we'll continue the relentless march to completion!  :D

Wow looking good Ron.  That thing is going to be a beast.  Can't wait to hear it run.   :)

Yeah, me too! We did have it running before and I liked the sound, just what I was going for. But I suspect it was a little rich, possibly due to the Marshall pipe being a bit more restrictive. Its jetted for Phaedrus I which ran a more open pipe.

I'm hoping that with the larger valves and Mike's relief of the ports and chambers (more than it was), it may run a little leaner, which could be just right. If not, the Mikunis are easy to rejet.   ;D

I just hope its a healthy 888. With a mild cam it won't be as much of a beast as some others. I'm going for a good strong touring bike.   ;D

How's the healing going?
