The weather cleared up, only sprinkled this AM so Rick came over and we got nearly 20 miles of breakin! Everything went great. Comment: "Quietest air cooled 750 he'd ever heard": (new primary chains, new cam chain tensioner from M3, HD cam chain, Reinforced primary chain tensioner f Voxonda);" transmission snicked, felt like a race box" (APE undercut),  "felt like it wanted to come on the pipe at 5,000" (we self limited today to 6000. something to look forward to.) "air intake noise took over exhaust noise at 3000rpm" (I wanted a quiet pipe, guess I got it).

Got about 19 miles on it, consecutive. So far no drips on the floor, no puffage out the muffler. We might have something here. Now to go over it closely and plan the next outing! Fun!   :D

Me too! Let's see. It was the whole 9 fibre plates (APE) and 8 steels (Barnett). I used the shorter than stock and APE HD springs that were in the clutch of Phaedrus 1. Unknown origin. ca 1980.

Rick said lever feel was OK, but might get a little Popeye forearm in stop and go traffic.

Rick said he's been working out with a "reaction time simulator". Hope we can get to the strip before they close next month.   :D

Teehee, sort of.

I changed the oil at 3 miles. Now with 22 miles will change again, or drop the pan and check the pump filter. Anyway, the next session will include full throttle. Off and on for 30 miles. Attempt to get top speed in 3rd or fourth. IF all is still OK and time has not passed us by, (Ocober 30th is closing) we'll see what the airport can do for a top end run, and or get to the dragstrip.

And a dyno run. Attempt to fine tune based on that adding another 100 miles or so.

Still OK, we'll see about longer trips, which may provide the vicarious hit I desire.   ;D   ;D

Well, build buddy Bruce has spoken with the manager of Sheridan IN Airport (don't think he's the owner, but may be), and indications were made that they would accommodate us for a speed run. The main runway is about 3800 ft and there may be some taxi space before that. That may not be long enough. And the person we're speaking with may not actually have the authority, and the FAA may have something to say, but tis interesting to ask. Its a private airport. about 20 miles from here.  If so, I'll buy a radar gun.   ;D

Here's the Rat GL1000 that won. Gotta admit its got some creative features. Overheard one guy say, "there's nothing on that bike I don't like". The seat is sprung from the front only and hangs out over the tire. The pipes are open and have tractor style teakettle poppers on them.

Here's #3 with #2, a really nice original NightHawkS in background:

Other examples:

No more shows this year, I think. There are some, just not for me.

You just never know what people are going to like.  That rat GL is not my cup of tea, but it is to someone.  The front end, however, would make for a great transplant/upgrade to a CB750.

That's right CRF. "No accounting for taste". Whether its theirs...or mine.

Volunteer Test Rider:

CAn just barely see him off in the distance, crossing that intersection. At that distance it was virtually unheard. He could go 3 miles 1 way, about 1 mile the other. I could observe the crossing.

I am so paranoid that if I let someone else ride it, they will get hurt, my fault or no. But Rick's experienced enough to feel a suspicious activity of the suspension or an oil leak etc. Plus he really wants to do it. The short strip has a RR crossing at 45deg to the road. Rick said it handled it no problem.

The trailer always draws on lookers. I've been able to load and unload it myself, though it helps to have a spotter.

Haven't attempted a followup. Its at a lower priority. First is just to see that its broken in, safe to ride (fast). We only have a few open weekends left till they close the dragstrip, and I'd like to get a  few timeslips in my pocket.  First priority.

Family fall obligations, work, and such. And everybody is predicitng heavy snow again this year. The Dreyer Dyno is open all year.

So the airport may be a springtime activity. But a few more phone calls to see if it could really happen won't take much time or effort.

Haven't attempted a followup. Its at a lower priority. First is just to see that its broken in, safe to ride (fast). We only have a few open weekends left till they close the dragstrip, and I'd like to get a  few timeslips in my pocket, (even if I'm not the pilot.  First priority. Rick said the throttle was a little sticky. And I think my chainguard is too flimsy to pass tech inspection, needs a new one made.

Family fall obligations, work, and such. And everybody is predicitng heavy snow again this year. The Dreyer Dyno is open all year.

So the airport may be a springtime activity. But a few more phone calls to see if it could really happen won't take much time or effort.
