The sidecar ones have outlasted a chain and 17T front sprocket.  Though admittedly they got changed around to suit tracks, over three years.

Thanks guys. Going from no hits at all, to 3 good sources. Now I have to choose. Surprised Ken at CycleX didn't know of these. But he's said his recent needs were satisfied by a 48 or smaller.

Missed the last 2 updates, but not the shop time. Basically, I got my jets from Z1, swapped out the 17.5 pilots for 22.5 and 120 mains (up from 112.5) to 122.5. Checked the float levels with new toy, float gauge from Z1. Reinstalled on bike. It fired right up with less choke and settled to a really smooth idle at 1000+ rpm.  :D

Will have to wait for a dyno to test the new main. Pics to follow.

PS: I just remembered I forgot to re-fiddle with the air screws. Should make idle even better.

Well, I hjad an appointment with these guys: http://www.mobiledynamometer.com/home.htm  at their brick and mortar home base in Kokomo IN, about an hour from here. But by the time I got my jets and got my act together its too cold. He does it outside in his trailer, pretty neat setup. So, unless we have an Indian Summer or such, it may be April.

Or I can look some more.

In the meantime, we've got to score some sprockets. And the rear wheel seemed to hop on the dyno drum, so I'll pull it and check for out of round.

We worked on the FJ carbs some more. On a whim, pulled a main jet and it was clogged. 2 out of 4 all told. Pulled the pilot jets and all 4 of them seemed to be clogged. Wasn't expecting that.  Easier and safer to buy new rather than clean the old, so that's what we did.

Forgot to put the float valve hold down screws in. So had to re-remove the float hinge pins which are pressed in. Found a discussion on an FJ board to use an automatic punch, rather than a hammer and punch. It sure did work better.

Pics later.

One of Bruce's friends was getting out of the sport and gave us a Craftsman lift. The kind that lifts from the frame rails. Can't use it when the pipes are on but otherwise.. price was right.

Its a combination of me taking off work at just the right time to get a window in the weather. It was also raining (its an outdoor dyno, mounted in a trailer that has to have the sides open for a test). and 70deg is his soft floor for temperature.

Today is sunny, but much colder, etc.

I feel the need... the need for (insert here).

Actually if those fit the later models, they won't fit mine as I have KO legs and the machinist used those dimensions to make the faux legs my dust caps are attached to. And K0 legs have a smaller dia at that point than later legs.

But thanks for thinking of me.  :D   :D

I owe about 3 weeks of updates, 10 or so pics. Worked on the malfunctioning rear turn signals and now they function. Required full teardown and cleaning.

Calling for a Dyno run indoors, hoping for Friday. Once that's done, we'll be regearing it to a 16/51, installing the lanyard deadman switch, and getting ready for drags in April.

I thought the 16 was what puts too much bind on the chain causing it to break and trash the engine case or was it maybe a 15 tooth that did that? I would like to try the 51 rear though. Sounds like it would be better for drag racing although making the front end come up easier. I don't want it for the street though. I like my 42 rear so I can split time in town and highway.

The 16 is commonly used for drag racing. What you are referring to is one of many theories for the breaking of chains early on. I am of the mind that the real reason was battery acid dripping from the vent tube and degrading the chain.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,102388.0.html

I've been told by a dragster that I need to be heading for a ratio of 3 or higher to get wound out in 5th. The 17/48 I'm running now = 2.8235.  The 16/51 = 3.1875, should be ideal. My smaller 17" rear wheel will raise that number effectively higher as well. So, I can experiment with 17/51 or 16/50, etc.

The 16 will accelerate chain and sprocket wear due to smaller diameter, but that's not an issue for my purposes.

Ron, what rpm/gear are you at when the bike hits the finish line with the 17/48? Keep in mind that once you get it dialed in it will pull the rpm's quicker so don't over do it.

First, I only have what Rick the Rider tells me. HE said he was topping out in 4th, and the tach was buried. The timeslip indicated he was doing 104+ through the traps.  Now I don't know if the tach was buried thru the gears and not thru the traps, or exactly what happened where. Rick was learning lots of things in a short period of time. Like how to hold on, reaction time, slip the clutch, slip the tire, he didn't do the pre-launch burnout every one else did. Maybe he should have. He was trying to get a feel for everything and with only 3 trips we're still learning. All 3 ended at 104mph, so something was consistent.

Rick holds 2 LSR at Bonneville, so he's not afraid to pin it. But he hasn't actually done a drag launch, till now, since 1970 or so on a BSA.

Lots of questions and few answers. That makes it fun. As for now, we're just racing against ourselves.

The Dyno should tell us where the power is and peters off. He may be shifting late.

Had to happen. I fell due to my peripheral neuropathy, taking a few steps backward I landed on my right hip, on the driveway. My skinny butt provided no padding. Luckily I did not break anything but got a deep, painful bruise. So, no shop time last week or this week. Maybe I'll finally post some recent pictures.

I'm on a walker now after several days in bed. Not sure if I'll recover to the point of navigating with a cane as I had been. Feet can get tangled in that as well.

We had Just finished an install of a walk in tub. We had to punch a hole in the wall of a half bath, and built a 5x5 room to hold it. Contractor did a nice job. I figured I'd need it someday, and that day came.

Tomorrow they install a stairlift so I can get up to my office without a spotter.   :(   :D     :D

I may have some decisions to make. Sigh, life marches on.

Ron............your learning that you need to protect yourself from FALLING..........praying you recover to better mobility.  I have 2 acquaintances with the same or similar 'balance' problem. Bob in California still gets to events on a trike.........he steps on the footpeg and swings his leg as if mounting a saddled horse. Charlie still gets to most of the AHRMA races with his crew, now uses a wheelchair in the pits. Its faster and gets him closer to the tuning-bench when needed.

I can see you on the road when you fully 'retired'...............you RV will have a 'Tommy-Lift' at the rear for the bike AND THE CAPTAIN ;)

Thanks OS, for the kind, sympathetic words. I don't know how I'll proceed. Your right, concentrating on each step is the way to go. We don't realize how automatic walking is till it becomes impaired. The old joke about blonde not being able to walk and chew gum at the same time comes to mind.

Leastwise, I'll be finishing up the projects I've got started. Getting around the shop with a cane, now a walker, heading back to the cane, really slows the timetable, which was anything but brisk as it was. But I'll keep busy with something.  Build Buddy Bruce has had to take over a lot of the hands on stuff, while I oversee, but it works out.

I'll be catching up with updates soon.  :D   :D

Thanks TT, appreciate it.

Went to my 5th neurologist yesterday and got some news. He thinks my issues are less with neuropathy and more with Parkinson's.  Frankly that would answer some more questions that neuropathy doesn't, like my "drop-foot".

Anyway, there is treatment for Parkinson's (dopamine) which can reduce symptoms to near 0, while there is no treatment for neuropathy except for pain, which I haven't been having.

So, some more testing etc. But I'm looking forward to the treatment.   :D
