Yes we got it running again, but it puzzles me as to whether its running on all 4. Usually, I have a real good ear for that. But this new pipe really changes the tone. A 4-1 sounds sounds uniform from idle to top. I can pick out a weak cylinder easily. This 4-2 has the 1-2 collected on the left, and 3-4 collected on the right. Instead of a uniform sound, it goes blat blat pause pause on the left, and pause pause blat blat on the right. (firing order 1,2,4,3). I think its all 4, but a good ride would tell the tale. It is really a different sound, almost ...  Harleyesque.

AS to the baffling: There is a plate, you can see looking in the butt hole, about 4 in down the tube, with probably 14 or so holes drilled in it. I then used a larger drill bit and drilled each hole larger  so they connected and removed a large piece of the plate to accommodate the DYNO sniffer wand. The megs themselves have a straight through tube of equal diameter down the length of them, to the reverse tip. The reverse tip is hollow.

The space between the straight tube and the megaphone flare has some light baffling in it. The straight tube is held in place at the small end of the meg, at the plate that I ridiculed with holes, and the ending plate at the end of the meg. You can see it by removing the reverse tip. But since I opened up that center plate, you can stick a rod straight through the meg to the collector and choosing one, on up the header.

Comments about the Vids: First thanks to CBJoe for the AV. I promised myself I'd get a smart phone this year and time is running out.

The bike stumbled when given throttle in one of the vids. That's because I'd been running it with the gas off. By the time we were filming it was starved for fuel. That was easily fixed by turning the tap on, duh!

Also, note that it doesn't smoke, as it should be. It has about 165 miles on it, and it wasn't babied, 12 drag-strip runs, and a WFO Land Speed Record attempt. Full speed accelerate to top speed and held at full throttle for at least 1/8 mile.

AND IT DOESN'T SMOKE!   

Mike (Rieck)  promised me it wouldn't, and he came through. I wouldn't have held him to it if it had. But we both believed that if its done right, no new engine should smoke, or have to have a delicate break in period. Just my .02.

Yes, absolutely! Just FYI, I'd like you to ride it a few miles at first. Then come back in and we'll check it over. If it passes then another 5+ miles to really get me happy with it. I'll have the trailer ready for a PU if it craps out on you.

I'm going to get caught up with some shoptalk in the next few posts. But first...

It must have been CBJoe, in his recent visit Sunday AM, who told me to check with the local Ducati shop for a Dyno. I was skeptical as I have done extensive Google searches for local Dynos. But, sure enough on their website they proffer a DYNO. https://www.indyducati.com/  I sent them an Email and sure enough they have one, available to the public, not just Harleys. Here's their response:

Hi Ronald,
We would love to do a couple runs with your Honda. Here is a link to our dyno page. https://www.indyducati.com/dyno-tuning   A pass with horsepower, torque, and air/fuel ratios will cost $100 plus tax. What kind of pipe are you installing? If you can send a picture I just want to confirm that our O2 probe will fit the exhaust.
The best day for us to get a couple passes is on Saturday. Thursday the 16th would work for a drop-off if you can pick the bike up Saturday afternoon.

Keeping with the garish 70s theme, I remember that back then, we had flat headlight lenses. I decided that I wanted one again. So after a loong search, I found one that suited me. I actually found one from a member here, but upon receipt it just didn't suit. The ones we had back then were CIBIE, but those seem to be NLA. So I found this off brand KIONIA I think. It sits behind the OEM lens:

I had an H4 left over from prior pursuits, that is a 100/55W (illegal in the states I think). It also has a blue tint to it, maybe a rainbow, Hard to tell.



It took a LOT of grinding and fidgeting to get it all to fit, but it did.


Along with HondaMan's relays, it puts out a very hot, torchlike beam.

That looks great Ron, I love my Marchal, all I had back in the 70's was the standard OEM headlight, and it was less than wonderful at speed on unlit country roads!

LED H4 bulb will make it even brighter. 
It is longer due to a fan and small connection box taking space (voltage adapter), the relays will then not have room in the bucket.

My K6 has parking light too managed from the handlebar switch. Parking bulb get 12V in position P, LO and HI.
I had to add a 3:rd relay to switch parking bulb off at LO to not disturb LO. Opening relay.

Photor here are a few years old. Here with a cheaper version of insert. I have now a Hella insert. Maybe not much that differ.

That head is bright Ron.  I use to run motorcycle head lights on my Seven, both with 100/55 bulbs.  Just about daylight on high, and yes the setup was highly illegal.

I have a LED headlight on my 550.  The light is more intense but cooler.  Also, where the incandescent bulb pattern would fade at the edges, the LED light pattern is very sharp.

A good headlight lense on the headlamp and reflector design is critical to getting a nice crisp light.  Hella makes a good H4 lamp, Cibie makes one that is several steps above it in my opinion. There are some on Amazon at a good price but, they are listed as an H4 foglight for some silly reason.  I can dig up the link and share it if you would like when I fire up the PC desktop again.

Well... how's 47hp sound? Yuk. You remember when you were here, I was still not convinced it was running on all 4. You messed with the plug cap of #1, and it seemed to run better. That was probably a coincidence. It has that sound of being almost OK, but not quite. The 4-2 has a different sound than the 4-1.

The Duc shop is really nice. Pics to follow. And the people were also. At first the service manager just wanted me to accept it. But I persisted, saying I could accept a 10-15% drop from 79hp, but not that much, and one of the owner/partner/mechanics said to try it again. The result was the same. So they started tinkering with everything, and finally checked the header temps with an infrared checker. Like you did with your hand. I can't do that.

#1 was 1/2 of the other 3, which were pretty uniform. Pulled the plug cap and checked the spark old school with a spark plug laying on the head. It was a healthy spark, and the bike seemed to run about the same with the plug cap on or off. So the conclusion is a carb problem.

I did mess with the float levels over the last winter, so I guess maybe I futzed it up.  They just charged me for 1 run, $100, and are looking forward to me coming back.

They ran many runs, and trialed and error-ed things, so the engine got a good workout. Still no oil leaks or smoking. More later.

oh yeah, Air/Fuel ratio was lean at the bottom, but by about 3000 rpm, it was no higher than 12 nor lower than 11, which the Mikuni manual says should be all right. So at least I shouldn't hole any pistons. I'll get the low range re-jetted.

I would be afraid of damage to cylinder 1 with it not firing.  If it is getting gas it will be wahing the oil out of that cylinder.

Yes. I'll be taking off the carbs and ordering an infra red ray gun, before it starts again. And ordering some fresh oil.
